  • Are survivors of the Southport attack being forgotten? | BBC News
The parents of some girls who survived the 2024 Southport attack say their children are being forgotten and given insufficient support, as a result of the anonymity given to them by the courts.
They have spoken to the BBC about the bravery of their daughters, and told us that keeping the girls’ names private was vital to protect them - but say it has also rendered them invisible, and struggling to access the help they need as they continue their recovery.

  • Ukraine frontline: the high-tech drones defeating Russian air attacks | BBC News
A major improvement in Ukraine’s air defence system has seen the number of Russian long range drones being intercepted and shot down doubling in just four months.
The new hi-tech interceptor drones are relatively cheap, and they are defeating thousands of Russian attacks.
In the past month Russia launched one of its most sustained aerial attacks on Ukraine, launching more than 1,500 drones within 48 hours. But most were shot down as Ukraine gets better at defencing its skies.
The aim is to shoot down 95% of enemy drones by the end of the year.
Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Jonathan Beale, on the frontline in Ukraine’s Donbas region.

  • TikTok and YouTube 'not safe enough' for kids says Ofcom | BBC News
Ofcom has criticised TikTok and YouTube, saying in a new report their content feeds are "not safe enough" for children.
The findings follow the UK media regulator's call for stronger action on children's online safety in March, and said Meta, Snap and Roblox had each agreed to stronger anti-grooming measures since.
Ofcom added it would share concerns that sites were not effectively enforcing minimum age rules with the government, whose consultation on whether to ban social media for under-16s soon ends.
YouTube said it worked with child safety experts to provide "industry-leading, age-appropriate" experiences for children. TikTok said it was "very disappointing" Ofcom had failed to acknowledge its safety features.

  • Will Rachel Reeves' summer tax cuts make a difference to the cost of living? | BBC Newscast
The chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced a series of measures aimed at reducing the costs for families in the summer holidays.
Ticket prices for families at various attractions such as theme parks, zoos and museums will be cheaper during the summer holidays through a cut to VAT, the chancellor has said. The government didn’t however announce any major package of support aimed at energy costs.
On Thursday it was also revealed that UK migration had dropped to 171,00 almost half of 2024’s figure. Adam, Chris, Joe Pike and Helen Miller from the Institute for Fiscal Studies discuss.

  • Donald Trump vows to recover Iran's uranium | BBC News
Tehran and Washington have demonstrated how central Iran's nuclear issue is to both the war and any future peace between them.
US President Donald Trump vowed Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium will be recovered, while reports emerged that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei issued a directive that his country's uranium should not be sent abroad.
Meanwhile, Pakistan is continuing its efforts at shuttle diplomacy and a warning from the International Energy Agency states oil markets are heading for a 'red zone'.

  • What is the US endgame in Cuba after Castro's indictment? | Global News Podcast
The US justice department has indicted the former Cuban president, Raúl Castro, on four counts of murder and conspiracy to kill US nationals. The charges relate to the shooting down of two US civilian planes by Cuban fighter jets off the coast of Florida in 1996.
The Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said the charges carry no legal basis and "add to the file they are fabricating to justify the folly of a military aggression against Cuba."
Our correspondent in Havana, Will Grant, tells us some in Cuba fear the island will face a similar fate to its ally Venezuela, after President Nicolás Maduro was captured by US forces.
President Donald Trump has dismissed suggestions that the indictment could lead to further escalation, and said the US is "freeing up Cuba".
For months the US has been intensifying its pressure on Cuba, imposing a fuel blockade that's triggered sustained power outages. On Thursday, the US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, says Cuba has accepted an offer of $100 million in aid from the United States.

  • Esports World Cup moved from Saudi Arabia due to 'regional situation' | BBC News
Mike McCabe, the COO and CEO of the Esports Federation, has said the "regional situation" left the organisers of this year's Esports World Cup no choice but to move from Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, to Paris.
Saudi Arabia's location in the Middle East means it has been hit Iranian missiles on a number of occasions since the US-Israeli war with Iran began earlier this year.
Other sporting events, such as the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix have also been axed this year.

  • Inside the Enhanced Games, aka 'The Doping Olympics' | The Global Story
What is the Enhanced Games and why is the competition so controversial?
At the inaugural Enhanced Games this weekend, something unprecedented is taking place; professional athletes from around the world will be encouraged to swim, lift, and sprint with the aid of performance enhancing drugs.
The competition — nicknamed the 'Doping Olympics' — has provoked enormous controversy in the world of sport. Enhanced runs counter to the many athletic organisations who have spent decades prioritising a crackdown on performance enhancing drugs.
Many in the sporting world say that a competition that endorses doping will normalise unfair and possibly dangerous drug use. But supporters argue that the competition will facilitate the safe, open use of drugs that are often taken unsafely and without medical supervision at competitions elsewhere.
BBC sports editor Dan Roan joins us to break down all things Enhanced Games. His documentary, Enhanced Games: A Sporting Revolution or Dangerous Doping?, is available now on YouTube.

  • Will flight cancellations affect your holiday? | BBC News
The boss of EasyJet has said the airline will not be affected by jet fuel shortages this summer, but says people are booking flights later because of the uncertainty caused by Iran war.
Kenton Jarvis told the BBC travellers should not panic as the airline had seen no issues with fuel supplies, adding that people could book with confidence.
The conflict in the Middle East has led to the effective blockade of the key Strait of Hormuz waterway, normally a key route for Europe's jet fuel, and this has led to near doubling in fuel prices.
Earlier this week, rival carrier Ryanair said Europe remained "relatively well supplied with jet fuel".
