  • How worried should we be about the Ebola "emergency"? | Global News Podcast
The World Health Organization has declared an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo to be a "public health emergency of international concern". Officials say at least 91 people have died in the central African country, and there are more than 350 suspected cases. The current outbreak of Ebola is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, for which there are no approved drugs or vaccines.
We ask the BBC's health and science correspondent James Gallager how worried the world should be about the spread of Ebola.
The WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said there are "significant uncertainties" about the scale of the outbreak. At least one person has died of Ebola in Uganda - the DRC's neighbour to the northeast. Another neighbour, Rwanda, has increased screening at the border. And at least six Americans who were exposed to the Ebola virus in the DRC may be taken to a US military base in Germany for treatment.

  • Inside the 'kill-zone' on Ukraine's front line | BBC News
The area near Kostyantynivka in eastern Ukraine is currently one of the most dangerous hotspots and the Ukrainian military admits that Russian forces have reached its outskirts.
Ukraine's 93rd brigade has had the job of defending Kostyantynivka and its surrounding towns and villages from Russia's advance.
If this highly strategic city falls, Moscow will be able to push towards the last remaining Ukrainian strongholds in the Donbas region – Kramatorsk and Sloviansk – from the north, east and south.
But warfare in the region has a new look, with drone attacks now the primary choice of weapon for both sides.

  • The American mayor accused of secretly working for China | The Global Story
A mayor of a southern Californian city has resigned after the US Department of Justice (DoJ) charged her with acting as an illegal agent of China.
Eileen Wang, 58 - the mayor of Arcadia - agreed to plead guilty to the felony count and Arcadia City Council said she resigned from her post last Monday.
Wang could face a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. Her lawyers, Jason Liang and Brian Sun, said in a statement on her behalf that "she apologises and is sorry for the mistakes she has made in her personal life".
US authorities say the extent of China’s covert activity and espionage in the United States goes well beyond this case.
According to the FBI, Chinese counterintelligence and espionage efforts are a “grave threat to the economic well-being and democratic values of the United States”.
We speak to Andrew Badger, former CIA case officer and co-author of The Great Heist: China's Epic Campaign to Steal America's Secrets.

  • WHO declares Ebola outbreak in DR Congo an international emergency | BBC News
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo a public health emergency of international concern.
The agency said the outbreak in DR Congo's eastern Ituri province, which has seen around 246 suspected cases and 80 deaths reported, does not meet the criteria of a pandemic emergency.
But it warned it could potentially be "a much larger outbreak" than what is currently being detected and reported, with significant risk of local and regional spread.

  • Deadly Ebola virus outbreak “a health emergency of international concern” says WHO | BBC News
The World Health Organization has declared an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo a public health emergency of international concern.
The outbreak in DR Congo's eastern Ituri province has seen around 246 suspected cases and 80 deaths reported, does not meet the criteria of a pandemic emergency.
But it warned it could potentially be "a much larger outbreak" than what is currently being detected and reported, with significant risk of local and regional spread.
The current strain of Ebola is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, the health agency said, for which there are no approved drugs or vaccines.
Early symptoms include fever, muscle pain, fatigue, headache and sore throat, and are followed by vomiting, diarrhoea, a rash and bleeding.
The WHO said there are now eight laboratory-confirmed cases of the virus, with other suspected cases and deaths across three health zones including Bunia the capital of Ituri province, and the gold-mining towns of Mongwalu and Rwampara.
One case of the virus has been confirmed in the capital Kinshasa, believed to be in a patient returning from Ituri. The WHO said that the virus has spread beyond DR Congo, with two confirmed cases reported in neighbouring Uganda. Ugandan officials said a 59-year-old man who died on Thursday had tested positive.
Reeta Chakrabarti presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Joe Inwood and James Gallagher.
