  • Sir Keir Starmer is fighting to stay on as prime minister as the pressure mounts | BBC News
Three members of his government, including Home Office minister Jess Phillips, have resigned, whilst scores of Labour MPs are calling for him to quit following a disastrous set of elections for the party last week.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is among a number of cabinet ministers urging the prime minister to set out a departure timetable.
Sir Keir said he does not intend to quit and threw down the gauntlet to potential rivals to formally challenge him as Labour leader.
No MP has yet launched a formal bid to challenge him, which requires the backing of 81 colleagues or 20% of Labour MPs, according to party rules.

  • Trump: ceasefire is “on life support” and Iran peace plan is "garbage” | BBC News
President Trump has said the month-long ceasefire between the US and Iran is on "massive life support". He described Iran’s response to US proposals to end the war as “garbage” and “totally unacceptable”, telling reporters: "That piece of garbage they sent us - I didn't even finish reading it,"
Iran laid out its demands to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz in a counter-offer sent to the US on Sunday. Esmail Baghaei, a foreign ministry spokesperson for Iran, responded to Trump’s comments, saying Tehran's proposals were "responsible" and "generous".
Tehran's offer includes an immediate end to the war on all fronts - a reference to the continued Israeli attacks against Iran-supported Hezbollah in Lebanon - a halt to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports and guarantees of no further attacks on Iran, according to Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency. It also reportedly includes a demand for compensation for war damage and an emphasis on Iranian sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.
The US president said Iran's leaders were "very dishonourable people", adding: "Look, I've had to deal with them four or five times - they change their mind." He also accused Iran of going back on an agreement to allow the US to remove its supply of enriched uranium and insisted that Iran would never have a nuclear weapon.

  • Can Labour win over voters — with or without Keir Starmer? | Global News Podcast
The British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has dismissed calls for his resignation in an address to the country, just days after his governing Labour party suffered significant losses in local elections. "I know I have my doubters, and I know I need to prove them wrong, and I will", he said.
The BBC's UK political correspondent Rob Watson tells us that Mr Starmer appears to have staved off any immediate challenges from his potential rivals, but that his premiership is still at risk in the long term. More than 50 Labour members of parliament have called for Mr Starmer to step down.
Analysts say the prime minister remains unpopular with his party and the country. The Labour government is under increasing pressure from the right-wing Reform party, led by Nigel Farage, and left-wing Green party led by Zack Polanski, who are gaining support with voters.
What will Labour have to do for a chance at re-election in 2029 - with or without Keir Starmer as leader?

  • Why America’s CIA coup in Iran haunts both countries - The Global Story podcast, BBC World Service
At the outset of the war in Iran, US President Donald Trump suggested that regime change was one of its goals. He later said it had been had achieved, a claim that is disputed by critics who point out that the same repressive forces in Iran still hold power.
American attempts at regime change in Iran have a long history. In 1953 the CIA, assisted by British intelligence, led a deadly coup that toppled Iran’s last democratically elected leader. It’s a moment in history that poisoned US-Iranian relations, and helped launch the theocratic revolution to come. But the immediate success of ‘Operation Ajax’ would convince the CIA to carry out a wave of similar plots around the world.

In total seven cases of hantavirus linked to the MV Hondius have been confirmed, with two other cases suspected, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday.
The US health department said a second American national on the repatriation flight had also shown mild symptoms, adding that both passengers had travelled back in "biocontainment units out of an abundance of caution".

  • Tourists on hantavirus-hit cruise ship isolating in hospital | BBC News
A passenger of a cruise ship that was struck by an outbreak of hantavirus has shown symptoms of the disease while being repatriated to France, the country's prime minister has said.
Sébastien Lecornu said the French national developed symptoms while on a chartered flight from Tenerife to Paris, and so all five evacuated from the MV Hondius had been "immediately placed in strict isolation until further notice”.
Meanwhile, twenty Britons are beginning 45 days of self-isolation in the UK at Arrowe Park Hospital on Merseyside after being evacuated from the ship and flown to Manchester.
They will stay there for 72 hours, before being asked to self-isolate for a further 42 days at home.

  • Trump says Iran’s response to his peace plan “totally unacceptable” | BBC News
President Trump has dismissed Iran's response to US proposals to end the war as "totally unacceptable".
Iran media reported that its response included proposals for an immediate end to the war on all fronts, a halt to a US naval blockade and guarantees of no further attacks on Iran.
Trump posted on the Truth Social platform: "I have just read the response from Iran's so-called "Representatives." I don't like it — TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE."
US proposals are reported to include a suspension on Iranian nuclear enrichment, the lifting of sanctions, and restoring free transit of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has continued to block the Strait of Hormuz - leading to a rise in world oil prices. The US, for its part, has been enforcing a blockade of Iranian ports to exert pressure on Tehran to agree to its terms - a move that has infuriated Iran.
Inside Iran, the BBC has been speaking to people struggling with the impact of the war. The regime has imposed an internet ban, but using trusted sources, the BBC has been hearing from people traumatised by the war, and by government repression.
