  • Israel to bar 37 aid groups from Gaza | BBC News
Israel is to revoke the licenses of 37 aid groups working in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, saying they failed to meet requirements under new registration rules.
Well-known international non-governmental organisations such as ActionAid, the International Rescue Committee and the Norwegian Refugee Council are among those that will have their licenses suspended on 1 January, with their operations to end within 60 days.
Israel said the groups, among other things, had failed to hand over "complete" personal details of their staff.
The move was heavily criticised by foreign ministers from 10 countries including the UK, who said the new rules were "restrictive" and "unacceptable".

  • Queen praises John Hunt and daughter, saying bravery prompted her to share assault story | BBC News
Queen Camilla has praised the courage of BBC racing commentator John Hunt and his family - after his wife, Carol, and two daughters, Louise and Hannah, were killed by Louise's ex-partner.
In a conversation with John and his surviving daughter, Amy, the Queen also shared publicly for the first time, her experience of an indecent assault as a teenager.
The Queen was speaking during a discussion on violence against women on BBC Radio 4's Today programme - guest edited by former Prime Minister, Baroness Theresa May.
The Queen told the BBC she had been "so angry" and "furious" about the attack - first reported in a book earlier this year.
She said she had "sort of forgotten" what had happened to her, but that the courage of the Hunt family had prompted her to speak about her experience.
She recalled having been on her way to meet her mother when "this boy - man - attacked me" adding "I did fight back".
John and Amy Hunt spoke to the Queen - and the Today programme's Emma Barnett - at Clarence House. The conversation formed part of a wider discussion about combating sexual and domestic violence - and the power of talking about experiences and trauma.

  • Trump hopes to reach phase two of Gaza ceasefire 'very quickly' | BBC News
Donald Trump said he hoped to reach phase two of the Gaza peace plan "very quickly", as he warned Hamas would have "hell to pay" if it did not disarm soon.
The US president, whose 20-point peace plan requires the militant group to disarm, made the comments as he met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Florida for talks on Monday.
During a press conference with Netanyahu after their meeting, Trump said Israel had "lived up to the plan 100%", despite continuing attacks by its military in Gaza.

  • China holds military drills around Taiwan as warning to 'separatist forces' | BBC News
China is holding military drills around Taiwan simulating the seizure and blockade of the island's key areas, as a warning against "separatist forces".
The army, navy, air force and rocket force have been dispatched for the drills which include live-fire exercises, the Chinese military said.
Codenamed "Justice Mission 2025", the drills are taking place days after the US announced the sale of one of its largest weapons packages to Taiwan worth $11bn (£8.2bn).
That move drew sharp protest from Beijing which in turn sanctioned US defence firms.

  • Netanyahu arrives in Florida for Middle East talks | BBC News
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has arrived in Florida for talks with US President Donald Trump that are expected to cover Gaza and a range of other pressing issues.
It will be their sixth meeting since Trump's return to office 11 months ago.
Any decisions made could have a potentially momentous impact on questions that determine the future of the region.
The US has been Israel's strongest military and political backer throughout two years of war in Gaza and many are now looking to the meeting as a test of the leaders' relationship and how aligned they are on key topics.
Perhaps most critically, they will discuss progress of the Gaza ceasefire deal, where Israel's government has taken several positions diverging from those of the US government.

  • Afcon 'bringing hope' to Sudan amid civil war | BBC News
Sudan's participation in the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) is "bringing hope" to the nation's people amid its civil war, forward Abobaker Eisa says.
The country has been in the grip of what the United Nations calls the world's largest humanitarian crisis since April 2023, when a power struggle between the army and a paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Force (RSF), led to conflict.
More than 150,000 people have been killed and over 12 million forced to flee their homes, with widespread famine and reports of genocide in the western Darfur region.
The conflict forced Sudan to play all their qualifying matches away from home, but they came through to book their Afcon spot for only the fourth time since 1976.

  • Trump says Ukraine peace deal close but ‘thorny issues’ remain | BBC News
Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky said progress had been made to end the Ukraine war during talks but the US leader added "one or two very thorny issues" remained.
While both the US and Ukrainian presidents described the Florida talks as "great", Trump reiterated that a key sticking point was the question of territory. Russia has previously demanded that Ukraine hand over more land.
Addressing reporters at Mar-a-Lago, Zelensky said they had come to an agreement on "90%" of a 20-point peace plan, while Trump said a security guarantee for Ukraine was "close to 95%" done.
Zelensky later said US and Ukrainian teams would meet next week for further talks on issues aimed at ending Russia's nearly four-year war in Ukraine.

Taiwan's presidential office has criticised the upcoming Chinese drills, calling them a challenge to international norms.

  • Trump says Ukraine peace deal “very close” after “terrific” meeting with Zelensky | BBC News
Donald Trump and Ukraine’s leader Volodymyr Zelensky have described their latest meeting in Florida as “terrific” and said significant progress had been made. President Trump said a peace deal to end the war between Russia and Ukraine was “very close”.
Speaking after the meeting, President Zelensky said the 20-point peace plan was 90% agreed, while Donald Trump said a security guarantee was “close to 95%” done. Zelensky said that was a “key milestone in achieving a lasting peace” in Ukraine.
However the US President also said “one or two very thorny issues” remained to be settled. These include the future of Ukraine’s Donbas region, which Russia’s President Putin has laid claim to. Trump confirmed that issue was unresolved although he said agreement was getting closer.
Notably, Trump and Zelensky did not offer any timelines, instead vowing to have their teams meet again in the coming weeks.

  • Ukraine’s president says Russia ‘doesn’t want peace’, ahead of meeting with Donald Trump | BBC News
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet Donald Trump in Florida on Sunday, for the latest round of talks aimed at ending nearly four years of war with Russia.
The pair will discuss an updated version of a US-brokered peace plan, which Moscow is yet to support, as well as separate proposals for US security guarantees.
Their meeting at the US president's Mar-a-Lago home follows intense Russian bombardment of Kyiv over the weekend, which Zelensky said is evidence that Moscow "doesn't want peace”.
On Friday night, a 10-hour missile and drone barrage targeting Ukraine's capital killed two people and left 32 others injured, local authorities said.
There were further Russian strikes on Saturday night.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Ukraine was "in no hurry to resolve this conflict peacefully", state-owned news agency Tass reported.
