  • Why are prisoners being mistakenly released from UK prisons? | BBC Newscast
News that two prisoners were wrongly released broke after the UK Conservatives' James Cartlidge pressed deputy PM David Lammy on whether any asylum seekers had been mistakenly released since Hadush Kebatu last month.
Adam and Chris chat to home affairs commentator Danny Shaw about what we know about their release and the individuals, and what the political ramifications might be.
Then Adam speaks to Sir Charlie Mayfield, lead reviewer of the Keep Britain Working and former Chairman of the UK's John Lewis Partnership to discuss his review into ill-health and employment.
We talk about his plans to get employees, employers and the Government working together to prevent economic inactivity due to people not working for health reasons.

  • Donald Trump's tariffs questioned in high stakes Supreme Court hearing | BBC News
Donald Trump's sweeping use of tariffs in the first nine months of his second term was sharply questioned during oral arguments before the Supreme Court on Wednesday.
Chief Justice John Roberts, and justices Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch – three conservative jurists considered swing votes in this case - peppered US Solicitor General John Sauer, representing the president's administration, during his more than 45 minutes before the court.
"The justification is being used for power to impose tariffs on any product from any country in any amount, for any length of time," Roberts said.
If the court ruled for Trump in this case, Gorsuch wondered: "What would prohibit Congress from just abdicating all responsibility to regulate foreign commerce?"
He added that he was "struggling" to find a reason to buy Sauer's arguments.
The case centres around a 1977 law, the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), that Trump's lawyers have said gives the president the power to impose tariffs. Although the Constitution specifically vests Congress with tariff authority, Trump has claimed that the legislature delegated "emergency" authority to him to bypass longer, established processes.

  • Zohran Mamdani wins New York mayoral race | BBC Americast
Election night is back in the US and this time around there’s a lot more for the Democrats to cheer about after the party’s rising star, Zohran Mamdani, won the New York City mayoral election and will become the first Muslim mayor of the biggest city in America.
The 34-year-old led his party to victory on the back of pledges to tax millionaires to pay for expanded social programmes and said that New York could be the “light” in a moment of “political darkness”. President Donald Trump has responded to Mamdani’s victory by writing on social media that the government shutdown and his name not being on the ballot were the reasons why the Democrats won.
But with Democrats Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill also winning their governors races in Virginia and New Jersey, there is a renewed sense of hope within the party that this could mark a turning point after the 2024 presidential election.
Justin, Sarah and Marianna assess whether the Democrats will be able to capitalise on their success, and how the Republican Party might respond.

  • Criminal network behind UK mini-marts enables migrants to work illegally, BBC finds | BBC News
A Kurdish crime network is enabling migrants to work illegally in mini-marts on High Streets the length of Britain, a BBC investigation has revealed.
The fake company directors are paid to put their names to official paperwork, and have dozens of businesses listed on Companies House, but are not involved in running them.
Two undercover reporters, themselves Kurdish, posed as asylum seekers and were told how easy it would be for them to take over and run a shop and make big profits selling illegal vapes and cigarettes.
The BBC has linked more than 100 mini-marts, barbershops and car washes, operating from Dundee to south Devon, to the crime network.
But a financial crime investigator told the BBC he believes it goes much wider.
The Home Office said it will investigate the BBC's findings.

  • Zohran Mamdani wins New York City mayoral election | BBC News
Zohran Mamdani, 34, has won New York City's race for mayor in a contest that rallied young voters and sparked debate about the future direction of the Democratic Party.
The Ugandan-born Mamdani, a Democrat, beat former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, running as an independent, to become the youngest person in over a century to lead the largest city in the US.
"My friends, we have toppled a political dynasty," he told the crowd during a victory speech, touting voters' "mandate for change" and "mandate for a city we can afford".
A self-described democratic socialist, he made affordability the central message of his campaign, pledging to expand social programmes paid for by new taxes on high earners and corporations.
Democrats also won governor races in Virginia and New Jersey, and in California voters backed a proposition to redraw the congressional electoral map ahead of next year's midterm elections.
