  • Manchester rabbi: ‘We can't despair… We can't give up’ | BBC News
In one of his first interviews since the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue attack, in Manchester, England, Rabbi Daniel Walker says the Jewish community “can’t give up”.
Speaking to Radio 4 Today’s Emma Barnett, Rabbi Walker said he has no “mental space” to think about why the attacker did it.
He also said that a visit from King Charles earlier this month showed him that “society cares” about the Jewish community.
Two congregants - Adrian Daulby and Melvin Kravitz – were killed and three others seriously injured when Jihad Al-Shamie rammed a car into and stabbed worshippers.
He was later shot dead by police. The inquest into the victims’ deaths begins on 29 October.

  • Hundreds killed at hospital in Sudan, El-Fasher | BBC News
Emerging evidence of systematic killings in the Sudanese city of el-Fasher have prompted human rights and aid activists to describe the civil war between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the military as a "continuation of the Darfur genocide".
The fall of el-Fasher, in the Darfur region, after an 18-month RSF siege brings together the different layers of the country's conflict - with echoes of its dark past and the brutality of its present-day war.
RSF emerged from the Janjaweed, Arab militias who massacred hundreds of thousands of Darfuris from non-Arab populations, in the early 2000s.
The paramilitary force has been accused of ethnic killings since its power struggle with the army erupted into violence in April 2023, but the RSF leadership has consistently denied the accusations - although on Wednesday its leader Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo admitted to "violations" in el-Fasher.

  • Trump lowers tariffs on China and ends 'rare earths roadblock' after Xi meeting | BBC News
US President Donald Trump said a full US-China trade deal will be signed “pretty soon” following a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea.
A series of announcements on closer trade ties have been made, including the US cutting the “fentanyl tariff” on Chinese goods entering the US from 20% to 10%.
In return, China will start “the purchase of massive amounts of soybeans, sorghum, and other farm products”, Trump says.
China says it will make it easier for the US to buy rare earths and that, in return, the US will suspend an expansion of export controls on foreign firms listed on the Entity List, which had hit Chinese companies.

  • First Hurricane Melissa deaths confirmed as Jamaican PM tells BBC about rescue efforts | BBC News
Four people are confirmed dead in Jamaica while at least 20 people have died in Haiti in flooding as a result of Hurricane Melissa.
Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness told the BBC he gives out a message of "hope to the Jamaican people" and says that the government will "be able to mount a creditable humanitarian and recovery response."
The true extent of Hurricane Melissa is still being revealed in Jamaica. Without power or phone coverage, much of the country is isolated and so information is trickling through.
As wind and rain lashed through the night, one local official said the destruction resembled "the scene of an apocalypse movie."

  • Two suspects partially admit involvement in Louvre heist, prosecutor says | BBC News
Two men arrested in connection with the Louvre theft two weeks ago have "partially recognised" their involvement in the brazen heist, according to officials.
The pair in custody are suspected of being the two who used power tools to enter the museum's Apollon gallery and steal some of the French crown jewels.
Items worth €88m (£76m; $102m) were taken from the world's most-visited museum on 19 October, when four thieves wielding power tools broke into the building in broad daylight.
Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said that the jewels had not been recovered yet, and the gang involved could be bigger than the four people caught on CCTV.
The two men, both in their thirties, have criminal records and were identified by DNA found during investigations, Beccuau said.

Local government minister Desmond McKenzie warned people on the island that recovery "is not going to be an easy road”.
No deaths have been confirmed in Jamaica so far but 20 people, including 10 children, are reported to have died in flooding in Haiti.
The UK government has now deployed urgent hurricane relief to the Caribbean.

  • Illegal teeth-whitening industry exposed by BBC | BBC News
Illegal teeth-whitening treatments that can burn gums and destroy teeth are being handed over in car parks and on doorsteps in the UK, a BBC investigation has found.
Some gels, containing more than 500 times the legal limit of bleaching agent for over-the-counter products, are sold blatantly on social media
As part of the investigation, a BBC reporter was able to obtain a fraudulent teeth-whitening qualification, as well as being given "extreme" bleach and advised to "practise on friends and family".
The British Dental Association said it was "appalled" by the BBC's findings and urged the UK government to launch an urgent crackdown.
