  • Can the UK’s Conservative Party come back from latest defection to Reform UK? | BBC News
Danny Kruger, a Conservative MP and shadow minister, has defected to Reform UK.
Speaking at a press conference alongside Reform party leader Nigel Farage, Kruger said “the Conservatives are over” and confirmed he would not be triggering a by-election.
In response, Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch said she was “not going to get blown off course”.
Adam and Chris discuss this, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s comments today that he would “never” have appointed former ambassador to the US Peter Mandelson had he known the full details of his relationship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
Plus, Adam is joined by Panorama presenter Jane Corbin ahead of US President Donald Trump’s state visit. They discuss the history of the special relationship, and whether Starmer has benefitted from his connection to Trump during his time in office.

  • Constance Marten and Mark Gordon jailed for 14 years each over death of their baby | BBC News
Constance Marten and Mark Gordon have both been sentenced to 14 years in prison over the death of their baby.
They were found guilty of gross negligence manslaughter after a long and complex trial which was beset by delays and bizarre outbursts.
Gordon will serve a further four years on extended licence, while Marten will not be released until she has served at least two thirds of her sentence.
Their baby Victoria was found dead in a shopping bag in Brighton, UK, in 2023 after the pair spent two months on the run. Pathologists are still not sure exactly how she died.

  • Israeli strikes target Gaza City high-rise buildings | BBC News
Tower blocks in Gaza City have been targeted and demolished by the Israeli military in recent weeks.
Israel says it issues warnings to evacuate before striking the buildings.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) estimate about 250,000 Palestinians have fled, though hundreds of thousands are believed to remain in the area.
The UN has warned an intensification of the offensive on an area where a famine has already been declared will push civilians into an "even deeper catastrophe".
Speaking in Jerusalem today, Israel’s PM Benjamin Netanyahu denied bringing down the towers to intimidate people, and said they were serving as “Hamas strongholds”.

  • Benjamin Netanyahu thanks US for 'enduring alliance' | BBC News
Israel’s prime minister has said the visit to Jerusalem by the US secretary of state is a clear message that America stands with Israel.
Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel and America “stood together in the face of terror” in what he called the “incredible lies directed at Israel”.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Hamas needed to “cease to exist”, and urged Qatar to continue to play a constructive role on Gaza.
The meeting between Rubio and Netanyahu comes as Arab leaders hold a summit in a show of support for Qatar following last week’s attack from Israel.
The strike on Qatar, which the IDF said targeted senior Hamas leaders, drew international outrage and was criticised by President Donald Trump.
In response to a question from the BBC about whether Israel's strike had damaged US relations in the region, Rubio said Washington maintained "strong relationships with our Gulf allies".

  • Charlie Kirk suspect ‘not co-operating’ with authorities, governor says | BBC News
Charlie Kirk's alleged killer is "not co-operating" with authorities and has not confessed to carrying out the shooting, Utah's governor Spencer Cox has said.
Suspect Tyler Robinson, 22, was taken into custody about 33 hours after Kirk, a 31-year-old right-wing activist, was shot dead on Wednesday.
Cox told several Sunday morning shows that investigators were still trying to establish a motive but people around Robinson were co-operating.
He previously told the Wall Street Journal that Robinson, a Utah native, was "deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology".
Kirk was speaking at Utah Valley University at an open-air event held by Turning Point USA - the organisation he co-founded - when he was hit in the neck by a single bullet.

  • Inside Afghanistan’s maternity health crisis after US aid cuts | BBC News
More than 400 medical facilities have closed down in Afghanistan, one of the world's poorest countries, after the US cut nearly all aid to the country earlier this year.
The Trump administration has justified its move, saying there were "credible and longstanding concerns that funding was benefiting terrorist groups, including... the Taliban", who govern the country.
The Taliban government denies that aid money was going into their hands.
But the sudden and drastic cuts have been devastating for the people of Afghanistan, particularly women and babies.
The BBC has gathered firsthand evidence of the impact on maternal mortality in the north-eastern province of Badakhshan.

  • Qatar holds Arab-Islamic summit over Israeli attack | BBC News
Arab leaders are holding a summit in a show of support for Qatar following an Israeli strike last week.
Qatar’s prime minister urged the international community to stop applying "double standards" and to punish Israel.
The strike, which the IDF said targeted senior Hamas leaders on the close US ally's territory, drew international outrage and was criticised by President Donald Trump.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is also meeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem, with the aftermath of the strike expected to be high on the agenda.
Rubio said: "Obviously we're not happy about it. The president was not happy about it. Now we need to move forward and figure out what comes next."
