  • US President Trump says Israel has agreed to conditions for 60-day Gaza ceasefire | BBC News
Israel has agreed to the "necessary conditions" to finalise a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza, US President Donald Trump has said.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that during the proposed ceasefire the US would "work with all parties to end the War".
Israel has not confirmed it has agreed to the conditions of a deal, and there was no immediate comment from Hamas.
Trump's announcement comes before a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu scheduled for next week, in which the US president has said he would be "very firm".

  • Has the UK Prime Minister lost authority after landmark welfare vote? | BBC Newscast
Today, UK members of parliament have narrowly voted in favour of the government’s welfare bill.
The controversial legislation passed after a series of last minute concessions by the UK government, led by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, but 49 Labour MPs still rebelled.
Adam Fleming and Chris Mason discuss what changes were made to the bill, how the government failed to manage the rebellion and the political blow the UK Prime Minister has taken.
Plus, three former senior staff at the hospital where nurse Lucy Letby worked have been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. A seperate investigation was opened into the senior leadership team at the Countess of Chester hospital after Lucy Letby was convicted of murder and attempted murder in 2023.
Adam is joined by BBC Social Affairs Correspondent Michael Buchanan.

  • Small boat crossings to UK in first half of year up 48%, figures show | BBC News
Nearly 20,000 people arrived in the UK in the first half of this year by crossing the English Channel in small boats - up 48% on the first six months of 2024.
Just under 1,500 people have crossed since Sunday, taking the total until the end of June to 19,982, according to latest Home Office figures.
The Conservatives said the government "broken a new national record - for failure".
Ministers have previously pointed to clear weather and the willingness of people smugglers to put more people onto boats as factors driving the spike in migration crossings.

  • US Senate Republicans narrowly pass Donald Trump's 'big, beautiful' bill’ | BBC News
Republicans in the US Senate have narrowly passed President Donald Trump's mega-bill on tax and spending, and it means the proposed legislation has cleared one of its key hurdles.
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act passed with Vice-President JD Vance casting a tie-breaking vote after more than 24 hours of debate.
It now heads back to the House, or lower chamber, where it still faces more opposition.
An earlier version was cleared by House Republicans by a single-vote margin.

  • Spain records hottest June ever as heatwave grips Europe | BBC News
Spain had its hottest June on record as scorching temperatures continue to grip Europe.
National weather service Aemet said the country's "extremely hot" June 2025 "has pulverised records", and surpassed the normal average for July and August.
Parts of Spain and Portugal recorded their highest ever June temperatures, with 46C registered at El Granado in south-west Spain, a day after records were broken in Mora in central Portugal.
Elsewhere on the continent on Tuesday, tens of thousands of people have been evacuated because of wildfires in western Turkey, while two people died in Italy following separate heat-related deaths.

  • Survivors describe horror of attack in Sudan’s Darfur region | BBC News
Sudan has been wracked by a civil war since fighting broke out between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April 2023.
The conflict has caused one of the world's worst humanitarian crises with more than 12 million people forced to flee their homes.
Darfur has been one of the areas worst-hit by the fighting and the RSF control most of the region - except for the city of el-Fasher that has remained in the hands of the army and its allies.
El-Fasher has come under intense bombardment as the RSF attempts to seize it.
In April it announced plans to form a government to rival the one established by the army, and has raised fears that it could lead to Sudan's partition.

  • US-Israeli backed Gaza aid group must be shut down, say 130 charities | BBC News
More than 130 charities and other NGOs have called for the controversial Israeli and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) to be shut down.
Over 500 Palestinians have been killed while seeking aid since the GHF started operating in late May, following Israel's three-month blockade of Gaza, the organisations said. Almost 4,000 have been injured.
The organisations, including Oxfam, Save the Children and Amnesty, said Israeli forces and armed groups "routinely" open fire on Palestinians seeking aid.
Israel denies its soldiers deliberately shoot at aid recipients, and has defended the GHF system, and said it provides direct assistance to people who need it, bypassing Hamas interference.

  • US Senate holds marathon vote on Donald Trump's 'big beautiful bill' | BBC News
The US Senate is holding a marathon vote on a budget bill that is critical to President Donald Trump's agenda.
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act hangs in the balance as Republicans - who control both chambers of Congress - remain split over how much to cut welfare programmes as they seek to extend tax breaks.
If approved in the Senate, the bill will return to the lower House of Representatives, which passed its own version by a single vote last month.
Elon Musk has stepped up his criticism of Republicans who "campaigned on reducing government spending" and then "immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history".
