  • Iran's supreme leader says country delivered "hard slap" to US | BBC News
Iran's supreme leader has given a statement to the nation, which is his first video message since the US strikes and Iran's ceasefire with Israel.
In a post on X before the message, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei claimed victory over Israel and said Iran delivered a "heavy slap" to the US.
He said the US "failed to achieve anything significant" by attacking Iran's nuclear facilities, accusing Donald Trump of an "unusually exaggerated" account of what happened.
Two weeks ago, Israel began air strikes on Iran, before Iran responded with missiles, and after a ceasefire was agreed, Trump called it a "12-day war”.
The US also attacked Iranian nuclear sites, before Iran responded with strikes on a US base in Qatar.

  • Intelligence indicates Iran nuclear programme 'severely damaged’, says CIA | BBC News
The CIA director has backed US President Donald Trump's view that the US strikes on Iran's nuclear sites caused severe damage.
John Ratcliffe said his agency has new intelligence that "several key Iranian nuclear facilities were destroyed”.
The Trump administration had been pushing back against a leaked intelligence assessment that suggested US attacks had only set back Iran's plans by “a few months”.
Meanwhile, the ceasefire between Israel and Iran seems to be holding and Trump said he doesn't think "they'll be going back at each other”.

  • Donald Trump asks BBC Ukrainian reporter about her family at Nato summit | BBC News
At a Nato press conference in the Netherlands, President Trump took a question from Myroslava Petsa from the BBC Ukrainian Service.
She asked whether the US would be supplying Patriot air defence systems to Ukraine.
Trump then asked where she was from and took an interest in her personal situation, asking whether her husband was a soldier in Ukraine, to which she said yes.
"I wish you a lot of luck, I can see this is very upsetting to you and say hello to your husband," he concluded.
Nato leaders have agreed to ramp up defence spending to 5% of their countries' economic output by 2035, following months of pressure from Donald Trump.
The US president described the decision, taken at a summit in The Hague, as a "big win for Europe and... Western civilisation".

  • Nato members confirm defence and security spend to hit 5% of GDP by 2035 | BBC News
Nato members have confirmed that they have agreed to spend 5% of GDP on defence and security by 2035.
Plans to reach that figure will have to be submitted annually and will have to follow a “credible, incremental path”. A review will take place in 2029.
The current target - for core defence spending only - is 2% of GDP, which not all members hit in 2024.
In a statement, called the Hague Declaration, members said: "We reaffirm our ironclad commitment to collective defence as enshrined in Article 5 of the Washington Treaty - that an attack on one is an attack on all.”

  • Nato set to agree big spike in defence spending at 'historic summit' | BBC News
Nato leaders are meeting in The Hague to decide on ramping up defence spending to 5% of their countries' economic output, following months of pressure from US President Donald Trump.
"For too long, one ally, the United States, carried too much of the burden," Secretary General Mark Rutte said in opening remarks in which he praised Trump for his leadership. "That changes today."
The Hague summit has been described by several leaders as historic, and Rutte said decisions made on Wednesday would include continued support for Ukraine while pushing for peace.
Only Spain has rejected the target of spending 3.5% on defence by 2035, with a further 1.5% on related projects.

  • UN condemns Gaza aid 'death trap' as dozens reported killed by Israeli fire | BBC News
At least 46 people waiting for aid have been killed by Israeli fire in two incidents in central and southern Gaza, according to rescuers and hospitals.
UN agencies have condemned the US and Israel-backed food distribution system, with one official calling it "an abomination" and "a death trap".
Such deadly incidents have recently become a near daily occurrence but have attracted relatively little attention outside Gaza since Israel attacked Iran more than a week ago.
Meanwhile at a Nato press conference, US President Donald Trump suggested that "great progress" is being made to resolve the war in Gaza.
"Even before this I think we were very close to making a deal on Gaza; I think this helped," he added.

  • President Trump insists Iran's nuclear sites 'obliterated' despite intelligence report | BBC News
US President Donald Trump has insisted that Iran's nuclear programme has been set back "decades" by recent US military strikes, despite an intelligence report casting doubt on their success.
The leaked assessment from the Pentagon's Defence Intelligence Agency estimates the attacks at the weekend set Iran's nuclear programme back only "a few months".
Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium was not eliminated in Saturday's bombings, sources familiar with the Defence Intelligence Agency evaluation told the BBC's US partner CBS.
But speaking at the Nato summit at The Hague on Wednesday, Trump said the strikes caused a "total obliteration" of Iran's nuclear sites.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth described the attack as a "flawless" mission, and said the intelligence report is “preliminary” and has a "political motive".
