  • Andrew Scott on playing the unsung hero of D-Day | BBC News
A little-known chapter of D-Day history has now become a major film.
Three days before the Allied landings, the weather looked perfect. But meteorologist James Stagg believed a storm was coming, and his forecast helped change the date of the invasion.
BAFTA-winning actor Andrew Scott, known for Fleabag, Ripley and Sherlock, tells David Sillito what drew him to the remarkable real-life figure he plays in Pressure – and why Stagg’s story still resonates today.

  • Germany’s far-right AfD celebrates major victory in eastern state | BBC News
Germany's far-right AfD is heading for a big victory in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt, far ahead of its mainstream rivals, according to voting projections.
No far-right party has won control of a German state since World War Two, and governing at state level would mean powers over policing, local education and culture.
It is not yet clear if the AfD vote will be enough to take power in the state but the party says it has won a mandate to govern.
The far-right Alternative for Germany is forecast to win a record 44% of the vote, well ahead of the conservative CDU on 17.8%.
The AfD's charismatic leader in the state, Ulrich Siegmund, said it was "sensational" and they wanted to start governing as soon as possible.
Saxony-Anhalt has a small population of 2.1 million and the AfD in the state is assessed by domestic intelligence as "right-wing extremist", a classification rejected by Siegmund.
The AfD's projected result is higher than earlier opinion polls suggested, and Siegmund along with joint national leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla were overjoyed as the news emerged.
"This isn't just about Saxony-Anhalt," Siegmund told supporters. "It's a signal for the whole of Germany - a self-confident signal."

  • How will the UK’s new government change the country? | BBC News
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has consistently talked about what he sees as the wrong direction the country has been taken over the last 40 years.
So as the new Chancellor John Healey prepares a speech for tomorrow setting out his plans for growth, we look at whether this government will be as different as it is being presented as.
The new Conservative shadow chancellor Andrew Griffith is also trying to distance himself from the past. We compare the two approaches.
And after more difficult questions for Reform UK and Nigel Farage over money, we ask where he goes from here and whether can recover from the damage they’ve caused.

  • Thousands of job cuts expected at Jaguar Land Rover | BBC News
Thousands of job cuts are expected at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), a year after a cyber attack brought car production to a halt for more than a month.
The company did not confirm the numbers but the Times reported as many as 4,000 jobs may be lost due to the impact of tariffs and a drop in sales.
Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds told the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg that when he meets the bosses of JLR and the Unite union to discuss the impact of the job losses early next week, they would focus on ways to "mitigate" the cuts.
JLR employs around 30,000 people in its UK operations and said in July that fewer than 300 people would leave the firm under cost savings plans announced at the time.

  • US envoys prepare for Ukraine talks after meeting Russia’s Vladimir Putin | BBC News
Two US envoys are hoping for "equally productive meetings" in Ukraine after holding talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on ending the war, US officials say.
Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are set to land in Kyiv on Sunday, the first trip by US President Donald Trump's top negotiators to Ukraine's capital.
They discussed "substantive plans for next steps" with Putin on Saturday according to the White House, and an announcement is expected in the coming weeks, as efforts to end the war in Ukraine gather pace.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was ready for "a substantive conversation" as Witkoff and Kushner were negotiating at the Kremlin, with talks lasting three hours in Putin's official residence on Saturday.

  • Why have two Reform UK officials stood down after an undercover investigation? | BBC Newscast
Two senior officials stood down from Reform UK after a Channel 4 News report prompted the party to investigate claims about funding.
Nigel Farage's senior aide Dan Jukes and Reform's head of policy James Orr have both stood down pending the outcome of the internal probe. The undercover filming was done by Verbatim Investigations and broadcast by Channel 4 News. Reform UK has denied wrongdoing and Nigel Farage describes the operation as entrapment.
The footage appears to show an attempt to secure funding from someone they believed to be a foreign donor. Electoral law prohibits UK political parties from receiving financial contributions from people who can't vote here. Reform denies any wrongdoing and says it has "been the target of a hoax perpetuated by foreign-funded climate change activists". Adam and Chris discuss.

The UK government said: "The right to peaceful protest is fundamental to our democracy, but we condemn the behaviour in Dover and the travel disruption it has caused."
