  • The campaign to replace Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky | The Global Story
Last week Ukraine's popular ex-defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov called for wartime elections, in what is widely seen as the biggest challenge to Volodymyr Zelensky's presidency since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022.
Zelensky, whose five-year presidential term ended in May 2024, has been under pressure from both Washington and Moscow to hold new elections, but they have been suspended until after the war is over. Fedorov says that corruption is depriving the military of weapons and making it harder for Kyiv to win the war, and that, "democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia”, although he tells the BBC that he had not himself seen the president engage in any corrupt activity.
The Global Story's Asma Khalid speaks to Vitaly Shevchenko from BBC Monitoring about where all this could lead.

  • One in 10 England dentists stop offering NHS care, analysis suggests | BBC News
Hundreds of dentist practices are abandoning NHS work as the service drifts towards a two-tier system, new analysis has suggested.
Data analysed by the Nuffield Trust found that nearly 600 practices in England have withdrawn from NHS dentistry over the last 10 years. The decline has been particularly sharp in parts of the South West and East of England, raising concerns about growing inequalities in access to care.
The analysis suggested more than one in 10 dental practices that once offered NHS care no longer do so, leaving it near impossible for some communities to find NHS appointments.

  • How the Taliban is running Afghanistan five years after returning to power | BBC News
The BBC has been given a rare glimpse at how the Taliban is running Afghanistan, five years after it swept aside a US-backed government in the country to return to power.
In that time, women have been excluded from most workplaces, banned from universities and may not travel alone or visit parks and leisure centres.
In encounters spread over two years, the BBC gained unusual access to influential figures in the extreme Islamist movement, spending time with men who once planned suicide attacks or spent years in underground hideouts, but are now officials and soldiers.

  • Andy Burnham in Ukraine to hand over UK blueprints to make long-range missiles | BBC News
Andy Burnham has arrived in Kyiv for his first foreign visit as UK prime minister, where it is expected he will hand over blueprints so Ukraine can build its own long-range missiles.
It comes as the UK government has agreed to allow defence company MBDA to declassify information on UK components for the long-range Scalp missile – the French equivalent of the UK's Storm Shadow.
The prime minister will also chair his first meeting of the "coalition of the willing", set up by the UK and France under his predecessor, Sir Keir Starmer.
Last week, Moscow warned of "consequences" over the use of British drones by Ukraine in its recent ramping up of strikes on Russian infrastructure.

  • Sacked Ukraine defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov calls for presidential election | BBC News
The former Ukraine defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov has told the BBC he stands by his call for nationwide elections even though the country is at war.
Fedorov, a popular minister who modernised the military and pioneered drone warfare, was fired last month after reportedly falling out with the head of Ukraine's armed forces.
In a video released online earlier in the week, he said "democracy should not be the hostage of Putin" and accused individuals in the government of corruption.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says he believes wartime elections would currently be too dangerous for Ukraine in remarks released on Sunday.
