  • Are AI and instability behind fewer people quitting their jobs? | The Global Story
During the pandemic, for the first time in most of our living memories, the balance of power shifted from employer to employee.
By 2021, the percentage of people in the US quitting their jobs was the highest it had been in decades, with tens of millions of people quitting in a single year, confident that they could find something better elsewhere - a trend dubbed ‘The Great Resignation’.
Five years on, and the quitting rates are way down. People are staying in jobs longer, if they are lucky enough to have one. Why?
The Global Story's Tristan Redman is joined by Anthony Klotz, a professor of organisational behaviour at University College London and author, who coined the term ‘The Great Resignation’ and Sarah O'Connor, a columnist for the Financial Times and author of ‘We Are Not Machines: The Fight for the Future of Work’, to explore how the world of work has been changed by AI, political and economic instability, and to consider how we can better enjoy the jobs we are in.

  • First round of US-Iran talks ends with 'encouraging progress', mediators say | BBC News
The first round of negotiations between the US and Iran to reach a final deal to end the war has ended with "encouraging progress", mediators Qatar and Pakistan say.
In a joint statement early on Monday, Qatar and Pakistan said that a "High Level Committee" had agreed to "a roadmap towards reaching a final deal within 60 days".
Iran's foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said there had been "major progress" towards ending the conflict in Lebanon.
The memorandum of understanding signed last week includes a commitment to ending the fighting on "all fronts" - including Lebanon - and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
"Pakistani and Qatari mediation has delivered major progress to end Lebanon War," Araghchi posted on social media.

  • Andy Burnham will run to replace Starmer as UK prime minister | BBC News
Andy Burnham has reacted to Keir Starmer's resignation, and confirmed that he will try to replace him as Labour leader and prime minister.

  • Sir Keir Starmer said to be on brink of resignation | BBC News
The British prime minster is widely expected to announce that he is standing down, perhaps as soon as Monday.
Government insiders believe that Keir Starmer has concluded his position is no longer tenable, after a series of senior government colleagues urged him to set out a plan for his departure.
US President Donald Trump claimed in a social media post that Sir Keir was resigning, saying that he had “failed badly” but he wished him well.
It follows the victory of his rival Andy Burnham in the Makerfield by-election, paving the way for his return to parliament, and an expected leadership challenge if Sir Keir does not step aside. He will be sworn in as an MP on Monday.
Mr Burnham defeated Reform, Nigel Farage’s party, in the by-election, seen as the biggest threat to Labour at the next election. Burnham’s supporters say that he now has the backing of more than 200 Labour MPs. If that is the case, it means that Sir Keir no longer commands the support of a majority of members his own party in parliament.
