Standing Fast in Christian Liberty: Brother Jim Shaw Preaches Galatians Chapter 5

Circumcision Brings a Debt to the Whole Law
Shaw reads Galatians 5 closely, focusing on Paul's flat statement that if a believer is circumcised, Christ will profit that person nothing. He explains that these Galatians were Gentiles, not circumcised and not of Abraham's lineage, and that Paul warned any man who accepted circumcision that he became a debtor to do the whole law. Shaw says such a person might as well go back to Leviticus and Deuteronomy and memorize every requirement, adding that the attempt would be hopeless because God has written the law on the heart. He recalls the command to love the Lord with all the heart, mind, soul, and will, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, the two commandments on which everything hangs. Shaw reads that whosoever is justified by the law has fallen from grace, and he speaks sarcastically of the religious trappings that such a person might pile on. He lists holy water, smoke, funny robes, kneeling, crucifixes, feast days, and holy days, saying that anyone who adopts them has fallen from grace by Paul's word.
Rituals, Clubs, and a Little Leaven
Shaw says mankind loves rituals and clubs, naming the Moose Club, the Masons, the Odd Fellows, the American Legion, and the VFW, because people want to belong to a team. He says that if believers want to be on Jesus Christ's team, they do not need any of it, since rituals get in the way. He notes that Paul asked the Galatians who had bewitched them, and reminded them that they had once run well, asking who had hindered them from obeying the truth. Shaw explains that circumcision was the central ritual of Judaism, the first thing God asked of Abraham, who was to circumcise his household, setting that family apart from every other nation. Shaw says Paul was opposing that ritual because believers live under a new covenant, with Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and the Father living within them, convicting them of sin and giving power over the devil. Shaw warns, in Paul's words, that a little leaven leavens the whole lump, so one small ritual invites many more to come pouring in.
Judgment for Those Who Trouble the Church
Shaw reads Paul's confidence that the Galatians will not think otherwise, and his warning that whoever troubles them will bear judgment, whoever he may be. Shaw asks listeners to see that the one who troubled them was leading people away from Jesus Christ and him crucified. He describes the physical church as a building that offers climate control, a seat, often music, and possibly a good message, all of which he calls beautiful. Yet he insists the true church is made up of living stones, believers scattered throughout the world, and that anything added to that complicates everything. Shaw reads Paul asking why he still suffers persecution if he preaches circumcision, and wishing that those who unsettle the believers were cut off. He reads that believers are called unto liberty, but must not use that liberty as an occasion for the flesh, and must instead serve one another by love. Shaw explains that this freedom does not permit sin, but releases a person from whatever has held them captive.
Loving Neighbor as Self and Walking in the Spirit
Shaw teaches that the whole law is fulfilled in one word, that a person should love their neighbor as themselves. He says that to love oneself rightly, a believer first obeys the first commandment by loving the Lord with all they have, and sees themselves as a piece of clay reporting for duty every day. Through the eyes of Jesus, he says, a believer can then love a neighbor as themselves. He warns from Galatians that if believers bite and devour one another, they will be consumed by one another, and urges them to walk in the Spirit so they will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh. Shaw describes the battle as one for the mind, and urges listeners to take every thought captive to the obedience of Jesus Christ. He quotes that the flesh lusts against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh, so believers cannot do the things that they would. Shaw says the old man must be put to death, since the believer is a new creation in Christ.

Alamo prays that the brother will be convicted and will surrender his life to God. Next, a man from Norman, Oklahoma, who found the Brace Yourselves literature on his car at an Oklahoma City Walmart, asks for fifty copies and the location of the church. Alamo lists congregations in Saugus, California, in Fort Smith and Fouke, Arkansas, near Texarkana, and in Elizabeth, New Jersey, plus hundreds of churches abroad. A Catholic woman in Boston thanks the ministry for the Dry Bones literature in the Sunday Boston Globe, saying she wants to cry at how beautiful it is and that she is passing it to friends.
Claims About Jews, the Vatican, and a Conversion
Alamo responds to the Boston woman by saying Jesus, the God in the flesh, was Jewish, and that anyone who is antisemitic must become a spiritual Israelite to enter the kingdom of heaven. He says the Vatican is antisemitic and claims tens of thousands of Jews are buried in its catacombs. He tells a story about a friend who owned Cashbox magazine, whom the Pope flew in hoping he would chart the Pope's own record, and who was shown the coffins by a guide who called their occupants enemies, the Jews. Alamo describes his own conversion in a Beverly Hills attorney's office, where he says the Lord spoke into his soul, threatening him unless he told the people in the room about Jesus Christ and His coming return. He says he then stopped going to work and searched for God until he found Jesus in the Bible with little money. He says hell is torment forever and that the time to repent is here on earth.
Bessie and Emily Testimonies of Salvation and Healing
The hour turns to two testimonies, one about Bessie, a Chicago rest home resident whose story Alamo wrote up in the literature That's What It's All About. Bessie, raised Protestant and later Catholic, says she went hungry so her children could eat, and after her death the Lord showed her hell and the crucified Jesus. She was sent back to her body with a promise to tell everyone, and young members of Alamo's church took her testimony to the rest home. A church member read the article to Emily, another rest home resident, who was in a coma with IVs, plasma, and a catheter, and Alamo says Emily squeezed the reader's hand and was healed. The next day, Emily was up and about with the tubes removed, and Alamo says she was healed through prayer. Lydia reads that Alberta, Emily's roommate, whose daughter attends the United Pentecostal Church in Fouke, saw the healing and now reads Alamo's literature in the nursing home, and that Teresa led Emily through the sinner's prayer.
Proverbs Five, Roman Canon Law, and a Sinner's Prayer
Alamo returns to Proverbs chapter five, verse thirteen, urging listeners to take firm hold of instruction and not let it go, because it is their life. Alamo reads verses on avoiding the path of the wicked and on fleeing evil, and he compares that to Joseph slipping out of his coat when a woman grabbed him. He says the Lord calls the Vatican the cause of every evil on earth and has Lydia read from Roman canon law, which he calls Satan's instructions and rejects, including a passage about divisions among believers. Warning Against Deception and Comfort
Brother Jim Shaw opens the fifteen-minute broadcast by recalling the words of Jesus not to be deceived, which he places in Matthew 24 and says Jesus repeats about four times. He asks whether believers can be deceived, answers that they can, and says comforts are the easiest thing to make into a god. Shaw insists there is only one way to the Father, through his Word, which he identifies as Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who suffered, died on a cross, and rose again. He describes the world as run by devils who tempt people toward hatred, bitterness, unforgiveness, revenge, and idol worship, and says the only escape and the only freedom is Christ, not any other religion. Gods of Comfort and Worldly Cares
Shaw warns that the devil often steps in front of believers and blurs their vision with goals and visions, as in the thought that with enough money they will finally get this or that. He cites Mark 4:19, the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things that enter in and choke the Word. He says believers must care for children, parents, and a spouse, but that such cares become a problem when they rule a believer and push Jesus aside. Shaw says the best thing a parent or spouse can receive is a person sold out to Christ. He describes a new birth that came from above rather than from parents, education, lineage, or church. He also says money is about the closest thing people will get to the Holy Spirit, since it can give peace, joy, comfort, and contentment until death brings a reckoning, when riches and goals die with the person.
Choked Word and the Fruit of the Spirit
Shaw explains that when the cares of the world, the deception of riches, and the lusts are allowed in, the Word of God is choked and becomes unfruitful. He reminds listeners that believers are meant to be good trees in the forest and the garden, bearing fruit for the Lord Jesus Christ. He reads Galatians 5:22 on the fruit of the Spirit, which is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and self-control, and notes that against such there is no law. When the Word is choked, he says, those fruits disappear, leaving bitterness, revenge, envy, and lusts in their place. Shaw tells listeners that they must watch what they put their eyes on and renew their minds with the Word, because people slowly conform to the things of this world without noticing. He describes this slow change as the danger that goes unseen until a believer finds the fruit gone.
A War Against Tests and the Narrow Road

Scripture, Locura, and Bessie's Vision of Hell

The report describes Emily, who is 88 years old, praising God for her salvation and what the report calls supernatural physical healing, and it says she wants to read the King James Version. Alamo adds that a roommate from the United Pentecostal Church is reading his literature. The account is the ministry's own and should be read as testimony, not verified fact.
Letters From Fort Smith and Vacaville
Lydia reads a letter from Scott of Fort Smith, Arkansas, who says he was saved at the church and that workers at a Fort Smith warehouse, talking about God on the job, changed his life. Scott says he began picking up tracts from windshields and the ground, and he describes reading the sinner's prayer to his wife's grandfather, who had throat cancer and was too drugged to read. The letter says the grandfather squeezed Scott's hand hard after the prayer and died soon after, and Scott's family is sure he is in heaven. Alamo responds that those who call belief in God foolish will one day know better, and he quotes the verse that he that saith there is no God is a fool. Lydia then reads a letter from Dave of Vacaville, California, who was moved by the sermon Dry Bones and asks for the booklet Messiah, saying he reads little outside the Bible. Alamo notes that thousands of letters have come in, more than time allows.
Roman Canon Law and a Closing Prayer
Alamo turns to Roman canon law, and Sharon reads that many elements of sanctification and of truth are found outside its visible confines. Alamo answers that only truth is found in the Bible and calls the Vatican the seat of Satan, while the moral law of the Ten Commandments, he says, remains intact forever. He repeats a story that Martin Luther returned from Rome calling the Vatican a sewer of corruption. He also warns against the democracy he says Rome fostered, describing mob rule and vigilante justice as the work of a spirit of Satan. Phones, Apps, and an NPR Headline
Steve Dupuis opens the Bible News Prophecy program with a common observation: people in restaurants, on nature walks, and at sporting events have their noses in their cell phones. Dr. Bob Thiel agrees that mobile phones have benefits but says many people are at least semi-addicted to them. He reads from an NPR headline that describes four features that superglue kids and adults to screens. Thiel notes that two landmark cases found social media companies liable for harming children, and that Meta and Google want to appeal, disputing that their products are addictive. He then turns to the research of cultural anthropologist Natasha Dow Schüll of New York University, who pioneered work in this field. Thiel says the article's central comparison involves the casino industry, which sets up the next part of the conversation.
Digital Casinos and Video Slot Machines
Dupuis suggests that Meta and Google should simply admit that heavy use was the goal of their development departments, then asks how the apps connect to digital gambling. Thiel explains that the NPR article ties the design to video slot machines, which the casino industry gradually and purposely created in the 1980s and 1990s as what many scientists consider the most addictive form of gambling. He quotes the article's description of machines that can play for twenty-four or even forty-eight hours straight, with some players reportedly wearing adult diapers so they never have to stop gambling to use the restroom. Dupuis responds that this is sad and worse than drugs, and asks what the addiction actually consists of. Thiel answers that Schüll's research identified four key features that, combined, hold people on gambling devices and produce a trancelike state the article calls the machine zone or dark flow, in which people lose track of time and place.
Four Ingredients That Hold People
Thiel works through the article's four ingredients, which together form what it calls a superglue on apps. The first is solitude. Schüll says that when the relationship is just between a person and the machine, the social cues for stopping disappear. The second is bottomlessness, with videos on TikTok and YouTube and comments and photos on Instagram appearing automatically in seemingly endless supply. Schüll says there is no natural stopping point, so people never feel finished or satisfied. The third is speed, which Schüll connects to the gambling industry's research and to social media and video streaming, where faster scrolling makes it harder to pull away. The fourth is teasing, which neuroscientist Jonathan D. Morrow of the University of Michigan calls perhaps the most important. He explains that apps use AI to learn what a user hopes to find, then withhold the exact reward and offer something close, and a few clicks later something even closer.
Isaiah 55 and a Surgeon General Warning
Dupuis remarks that every search on his computer or phone brings up things he is almost looking for, and Thiel agrees the teasing feature shows up often in apps. Thiel says the same teasing principle drives gambling and pornography, which people spend large amounts of money on. He cites Isaiah 55:2, which asks why people spend their wages on what does not satisfy. Thiel adds that pornography was basically the major initial funding for the commercial internet, and that excessive social media use brings other problems as well. He then recalls a 2023 report from the US Surgeon General on teens and social media, which the office put out as a public statement calling for attention to an urgent public health issue. Thiel summarizes its finding that concerns about the effect of social media on youth's mental health are growing, while noting that the report did not look at everything and that its recommendations include things adults can do.
Algorithms, Bubbles, and Satan's Natural Ways
Dupuis asks whether the court rulings and the Surgeon General's call have finally addressed the risk. Thiel answers that despite the rulings, the concern remains, pointing to a second article headlined Social Media Algorithms Are Becoming Increasingly Dangerous. He reads its warning that algorithms are shaping how people communicate and behave, then quotes a first-person account of anxiety when an unanswered phone buzzes. Thiel mentions a Columbia University study finding that engagement-based algorithms amplify emotionally charged and opposing content, and quotes Jose Marichal of California Lutheran University on scrolling as a reward that frees people from boredom. Dupuis then asks whether any of this could be satanic. Thiel answers that in many ways it is how Satan works, citing 2 Corinthians 4:4 calling him the god of this world and Ephesians 2:2 calling him the prince of the power of the air. He says Satan's ways, including web design tricks, gambling, pornography, and algorithms, often seem natural and normal.
Three Steps and the Armor of God
Dupuis asks where things go from here, since everyone uses cell phones. Thiel offers three suggestions for children and adults: limit time spent on the internet or cell phones, never intentionally view pornography, and often keep mobile phones turned off. He then turns to Ephesians 6, reading from the New King James Version the call to put on the whole armor of God to stand against the wiles of the devil, because the struggle is not against flesh and blood. Thiel stresses that Paul also urged praying always and supporting the spread of the gospel. He adds that people who do not want to do what God says cannot break Satan's influence, but with God's help they can change, citing Philippians 4:13. Thiel also recommends a video on changing one's life in five seconds, and closes that anyone can break the superglue of social media, gambling, or pornography by obeying God's word, relying on Jesus, and supporting God's work. He admits some of what he says will draw criticism, as it has before, but says he is not fearful.
Jehoshaphat, the Singers, and the Echoing Valley
Montgomery turns the congregation to 2 Chronicles chapter 20, where King Jehoshaphat stands before the Lord as the armies of Moab and Ammon come against Israel. He reads the king's prayer, which asks God to judge the enemy and confesses that Israel has no might against so great a company. Montgomery stresses that the king's eyes are fixed on God, and he says he wishes Israel's leadership would make that same public statement today. God's answer, as he tells it, is to send singers down into the valley ahead of the army, singing that God's mercy endures forever. Montgomery describes the song echoing off the rocks until the enemy hears what seems like millions of voices and turns on itself. He notes that no Hebrew sword is drawn and that the spoil takes several trips to carry away. He says he has been telling his wife all week that he is looking for God to work a miracle, and he expects this war to draw Israel back together.
Psalm 83 and the Enemies of God
Montgomery moves to Psalm 83, which he describes as a portrait of this same war, noting that the psalms are prophecy too. He reads the psalmist's cry, 'Keep not silent, O God,' and draws attention to the words 'Lo, thine enemies.' He states plainly that the armies against Israel are the enemies of God, and that the psalm describes them making a tumult and taking crafty counsel against God's hidden ones. He quotes the plot to cut Israel off from being a nation so that its name may be no more in remembrance. Montgomery says the purpose of Islam, in his view, is to eradicate Israel, because its followers hate God and anything that represents him. He reads verse five, in which the enemies consult together with one consent, and he names Edom and the Ishmaelites among them. He tells the congregation that the Arab world, for the most part, descends from Esau and Ishmael, and that this lineage is the key to the whole conflict.
Esau, Ishmael, and the Chosen Seed of Jacob
Montgomery presses the point that God did not choose Ishmael or Esau. He says God states plainly in Genesis, Malachi, and Romans, and hints in Hebrews, that 'Jacob have I loved, Esau have I hated.' He explains that Esau is left out as far as spiritual things are concerned, though not as far as physical things, and that the one God hates becomes a hater of God. The promise, he says, runs through Jacob and the twelve tribes, leaving the other descendants of Abraham outside it. Montgomery claims God revealed himself only to the nation he chose and left the other nations in silence. He then turns to Deuteronomy 7, reading that Israel is a holy people, chosen to be a special people above all the peoples on the earth. He admits that Israel is rebellious and easily drawn into idolatry, yet insists God judges them and brings them home rejoicing. He says Israel has not known peace in the land since it was re-established.
A Preacher's Question and Warnings About the Church
Montgomery recounts a phone call from a preacher who asked whether the current fighting meant the battle of Armageddon and whether he was still pretribulation. Montgomery tells him it is not yet Armageddon, though this war could set the stage for it, and says the hatred of God is being uncovered both overseas and in the United States. He says that people walking the city streets, and people sitting in churches who would like to walk with them, are, in his words, children of hell. He says he told Ginger that God might open the earth and swallow these people right into hell. He says he has preached for at least twenty-five years that the church of Revelation is not the Catholic Church but the Muslim religion, and that people once argued with him. He describes Islam as beginning around 600 AD and being kept among the Arabs for years. Montgomery turns to churches, saying most groups that call themselves churches are not worshipers of the God of the Bible, and that the same spirit that drives Islam drives hatred for God in them.
The Gaza Hospital Claim and a Call to Revival
Montgomery turns to Congress and to the universities, which he calls higher schools of ignorance, and says Congress should be expelled 'not next week, but now.' He tells the congregation that the world has turned against Israel over a hospital explosion in Gaza, and argues that Islamist forces launched a weapon that ran out of fuel and fell short. He says early reports claimed more than 500 people died, but he believes the figure is closer to 200, who died in the parking lot rather than the hospital. He uses this to argue that Israel did not carry out the attack. Montgomery also mentions a figure he calls Barney, whom he says can see only one direction. He then makes a plea for revival, saying he does not want to go to heaven lukewarm but boiling, loving the Lord. He urges the church to fall in love with Jesus again, pointing to the church in Revelation that has left its first love. He closes by inviting the congregation to pray for the God of glory and for one another.

The Faithful and True Rider on a White Horse
Kinley reads Revelation 19:11 and says heaven opens so that Jesus can come out, just as it opened in chapter 4 so that John could come in. He stresses that Christ is not coming back to rescue anyone at the end of the tribulation but to do battle. He contrasts this kind of coming, which many signs precede, with the rapture, which he calls a signless event with nothing that must happen before it. Kinley notes that Jesus describes His arrival as coming like a thief, citing Revelation 16:15, and says nobody will know what is about to hit them. He then explains the white horse, comparing it to the victory steeds of first-century Roman generals returning from war. Jesus has traded the humble donkey of His triumphal entry for a horse, Kinley says, because He is coming not to die but to reign. He calls the rider Faithful and True, linking that title to Revelation 1:7 and 3:14, and says that a Savior who keeps every promise will return exactly as He said.
A Robe Dipped in Blood and Crowns of Enemies
Kinley turns to the eyes, crowns, names, and garment of the rider. He says the flaming eyes recall Revelation chapter 1, a penetrating gaze that nothing can hide from, the same eyes that once wept over Jerusalem and at Lazarus' funeral. The many crowns, he explains, use a Greek word for a ruler's crown, and most commentators take them to be the crowns of the earth's rulers, which Kinley believes Jesus has taken for Himself as the ruler over all rulers. He compares this to David taking the crown of the Ammonite king in 2 Samuel. Kinley says the secret name that only Jesus knows is probably tied to His intimate relationship with the Father, and he refuses to guess at it. For the blood on the robe, he points to Isaiah chapter 63, where a figure comes from Edom in garments of glowing colors from Bozrah. He places Bozrah in modern Jordan near Petra and believes tribulation Jews will flee there after the abomination of desolation. The blood, he concludes, belongs to His enemies.
Armies in White and the Mount of Olives
Kinley describes the armies that follow Christ, citing Revelation 19:14 and reading that they are clothed in fine linen, white and clean, on white horses. He identifies them as the church and the saints in heaven, and adds that tribulation martyrs and Old Testament saints may ride with them. He jokes that listeners will have to learn to ride, though they will not need to fight, because Christ alone does battle with the sword from His mouth. Kinley reads Revelation 19:15, where the sword smites the nations and Christ rules them with a rod of iron, and calls the Word of God the weapon. He then turns to Zechariah 14:4, saying Christ's feet will touch the Mount of Olives, which will split apart in a great earthquake. He recalls that the Mount of Olives is where Jesus spoke of the last days and where He ascended. Kinley also cites a 2004 NBC News report on a fault line there, offering it as evidence that Scripture is accurate.
The Reasons for the Return and a Closing Appeal
Kinley closes with the reasons Christ returns, giving several in turn. Jesus returns to make good on His promise, and because He is faithful, every other promise God has made can be trusted. He will restore Israel, which Kinley says will see the remaining Israelites saved, and He will judge the nations at the sheep and goats judgment. Kinley adds that Christ will resurrect Old Testament saints, bind Satan for a thousand years in a bottomless pit, and reign on earth as King. He connects this to the familiar Christmas verses about a child born and government resting on His shoulders, noting that the first coming was as Savior and the second as sovereign King. He calls the Second Coming more exciting than a last-second touchdown and more emotional than a soldier's homecoming. The announcer then reads an offer for the book Biblical Discernment, and Kinley closes by declaring that God is faithful and urging prayerful support of World Prophetic Ministries.
