FORWARD : Week Four

With all our responsibilities, extracurriculars, and the infinite availability and access to time wasters, it's never been easier to make excuses for why we don't have what it takes to work on improving our relationships and looking more like Jesus. In Luke 9:57-62, Jesus challenges three people to ditch distraction and choose to follow him. If we're going to experience perseverance and effectiveness in our faith, our focus must be fixed on Jesus. In order to move forward, we'll have to leave excuses behind!

FORWARD : Week Three

For a split second, it's really satisfying to stick it to someone who hurt or offended us. That satisfaction quickly fades and its fulfillment degrades to grudges and burnt bridges. Leaving relationships in this manner sets our hearts up for an infestation of anger, bitterness, and regret. Romans 12:17-18 offers some very straight forward advice for how to handle this type of situation and encouragement for avoiding it, because when we hold on to grudges, they hold on to us! We're helping students acknowledge grace and forgiveness are required in order to move FORWARD.

Whether they've been dictated for us by others or by ourselves, everyone is walking around with labels. We're going to be talking about the dangers and the benefits (yes, the benefits) of the labels we have, as well as discuss who has the right to label and who does not. 1 Peter has plenty to explore regarding how we ought to identify ourselves and others. The only labels we should accept are the labels given to us by our Creator. We're helping listeners determine which labels they need to leave behind in order to move FORWARD.

FORWARD : Week One

We're all looking forward to moving forward in something. Whether it's school, sports, relationships, or our faith, we have good intentions of making progress in something. During our series, "FORWARD," we'll take a look at some of the things that can hold us back from moving forward and interrupt our good intentions. This week, listen in as we explore what the author of Hebrews wrote to some folks about having endurance and what it will take for them to move FORWARD.

There are many opportunities to fight and stand up against injustice. All over the world there are people doing what they can to create change, but you don't have to move across the world to change the world. Bryan Brown (guest speaker for BCC Students events like Eagle Rock, Beach Camp, and Black Mountain) will show us we have a great opportunity to change the world by beginning with where we are now within our own community. We're helping students realize that helping one person may seem small, but it could change their world in a big way.

It’s not too difficult to take a look around our world and identify injustices we’d like to end. The difficulty can come in determining where to start! There are a lot of great initiatives doing big things in an effort to fight injustice, but a fight against injustice doesn’t always have to start with an elaborate act. Introspection is just as effective and meaningful of a start as any. As we consider the injustices of our world and what we can do to help, Matt will help us take a difficult look at ourselves and identify how we may be unknowingly contributing to the very injustice we wish to end.

It won't take you long to take a look around and determine our world is not perfect. There are plenty of examples of how imperfect people are treating others poorly and unfairly. This type of injustice is something we ought to do something about... if you can recognize it. Jeff Fuchs shares the importance of knowing how to recognize injustice. We're helping students begin to see and recognize the injustice happening in the world around them and encouraging them to be thoughtful and active in response.

Whether you are the private type or the kind of person who can't stop talking about anything and everything, people have a tendency to hide things in our lives. And the more serious something is, the more likely we are to keep it hidden. One of those things for many students is suicidal thoughts. Instead of keeping suicidal thoughts hidden, we’ll discover how bringing them to light by telling someone can be the first step toward healing. We're challenging listeners to identify the truths they need to remember when they’re tempted to believe lies.

Entertainment is not intrinsically a harmful thing. Entertainment can be a means for rest, refreshment, joy, community, and an escape from life's business. It can also be hurtful, demeaning, and detrimental to our relationships and influence with others What we expose ourselves to - what we choose to watch, listen to, and participate in - will always have an affect on us. Because this is true, we ought to give it more thought. We're challenging listeners to evaluate their exposure!
