Well-Yes!

"Be a Lifelong Learner like our guest, Rae Smedley!" Season 3; Episode 158

Listen Later

On this episode, our friend Rae, shares the importance of being a lifelong learner.  Rae says that she began this interest in learning as a child when her mother, who was a teacher, promoted learning.  Rae shares that her mother would enroll her in courses at the Art Museum, YWCA, Natural Museum of History and anything else she could find that would give Rae a chance to learn and grow.   One example is when her mom found duck eggs when she was golfing with Rae's dad and brought them home for Rae and her brother to care for and then raise the ducklings. Rae's first big learning experience came at age 11, when her mother convinced their cleaning lady to let Rae travel to Germany with her for a month with no knowledge of the German language.  She said that her thirst for learning starts with curiosity, and she embraces the fact that no one is too old to learn. Both she and her husband feel that they can learn something new every day.  Over the past few years to continue learning, Rae has taken courses in Economics, Art Therapy, Bob Dylan music, Rain Garden classes, and Growing Hoyas. She has been involved in many nonprofit organizations and has been on many boards.  She recently agreed to take a position on the board of Another Act of Kindness as treasurer which is the only position she didn't hold in the past and was the only position she felt uncomfortable taking.  She said that she loves to learn, and she admits that sometimes when she is learning something new, it pushes her outside of her comfort zone.  However, she never allows fear to hold her back.  Listen and learn how to grow every day by having curiosity and an open mind like our friend Rae!
