In this podcast episode, I want to reflect on my experience participating in the Great Ocean Road running festival. Overall, I felt pretty good about my preparation leading up to the event. I had put in the necessary training and felt confident about my fitness level.
During the race, my heart rate and breathing were in a good range, which was a positive sign. However, at the 32-kilometer mark, I encountered a setback with my knees. They started giving me trouble, and I could feel the pain and discomfort affecting my stride. It was a frustrating moment that impacted my overall performance and enjoyment of the race.
One key lesson I learned from this experience is the importance of being mindful of the running environment. The high winds along the Great Ocean Road proved to be a significant challenge. I hadn't fully anticipated the impact they would have on my time and energy expenditure. Going forward, I will pay more attention to external factors like weather conditions and adjust my expectations accordingly.
Another takeaway for me is the need to prioritize strength and conditioning exercises, particularly for my knees. The knee issues I faced during the race highlighted the importance of having strong and stable joints. Incorporating specific exercises into my training routine will be crucial to prevent injuries and improve my overall performance.
Looking back, I realize that I need to focus more on the stretch between 35 and 44 kilometers in future races. This is an area where I struggled and felt the need for improvement. By identifying this specific segment, I can tailor my training and strategy to tackle it more effectively in future races.
In conclusion, my participation in the Great Ocean Road running festival was a mixed experience. While I felt prepared overall, the knee problems at 32 kilometers reminded me of the importance of considering external factors and taking care of my body through strength and conditioning. Moving forward, I will apply these lessons to my training and future races to become a better runner.
