  • What You'll Learn from My First Stand-Up Comedy Class

What happens when a communication coach and consultant steps out from behind her experience and expertise and into the spotlight of stand-up?

In this episode, I take you behind the scenes of my first experience learning stand-up comedy, and into the thoughts, nerves, surprises, and lessons that came up along the way.

Stand-up is nothing like writing a polished speech. And it’s not improv, either. It asks you to care deeply about what you’re saying, take a persuasive point of view, and be willing to stand behind it—even when you know some people in the room might not agree with you or find it funny.

That kind of vulnerability has been both uncomfortable and incredibly freeing.

I’m discovering that being magnetic isn’t about making everyone like you. It’s about being fully present, owning your perspective, and enjoying yourself enough that other people want to come along for the ride.

And perhaps the biggest lesson so far? If you’re not having fun, the audience probably isn’t either.

Come with me as I share what my first stand-up experience is teaching me about communication, confidence, authenticity, and what it really means to connect with an audience.

    In this episode, we explore:

    • Why doing stand-up feels so different from giving a speech and doing improv
    • What it means to have a point of view—and actually stand for something
    • Why you can’t create for an audience of people who will all agree with you
    • The vulnerability of knowing some people simply may not like what you have to say
    • Why authenticity matters more than trying to please everyone
    • The relationship between confidence, playfulness, and connection
    • What happens when a communication coach becomes the student
    • And the surprisingly important lesson that if you’re not having fun, your audience probably won’t either.

For me, this experience is becoming about much more than learning how to tell a joke. It’s teaching me something about being seen, taking risks, owning my perspective, and letting people experience the real me.

And maybe that’s what being magnetic is all about.

The takeaway: You don’t have to make everyone like you. You have to be willing to show up, care about what you’re saying, stand for it and have enough fun doing it that people want to stay with you.

Listen in, laugh with me, and come along for the experiment.

  • Stage Craft with Zach Peterson

What does it take to own the room as a stand-up comic — and how does that translate to coaching and speaking? In this episode, I sit down with my own stand-up teacher Zach Peterson, a professional comic with razor-sharp instincts and a big heart. We unpack what makes a joke land, how to deal with silence, and why being magnetic isn't about being loud — it's about being honest. Zach offers practical tools for reading the room, writing your truth, and standing in your power on stage.
