Welcome back to BeQuranic—it’s Tajweed Tuesday! Today, we’re diving into our ayat of the week, which is Surah Ar-Rahman, verses 37 to 45. If you missed it, check out the recitation posted yesterday!

Before we break down the ayat, let’s do a quick Tajweed recap:

• We know Tajweed is all about beautifying our recitation—perfecting letter pronunciation and knowing where to stop and start.

• We’ve talked about major and minor mistakes (Lahan Jali vs. Lahan Khafi). Major mistakes affect meaning (big problem!), while minor ones just refine our recitation.

• We’ve covered Mad Asli (the basic elongation) and Wajibul Ghunnah (that nasal sound with Nun and Mim Shaddah).

What’s New This Week?

This week, we learned about Iqlab, which means “switching.” It happens when a Nun Sakin or Tanwin is followed by a Ba (ب). Instead of pronouncing the Nun, you switch it to a Meem sound with two harakats of Ghunnah.

Example: Instead of saying “dhanbihi”, you say “dhambihi” with a clear Meem sound.

You’ll notice this in the Madinah Mushaf, where there’s a tiny Meem above the Nun Sakin or Tanwin. That’s your cue to switch!

Tajweed Breakdown of the Ayat

As we recited our ayat, we spotted:

• Idgham (merging letters) – Full mergers happen with Yarmaloon letters, but some are with or without Ghunnah!

• Ikhfa (half-mergers) – These happen when Nun Sakin meets other letters, like Sheen or Kaf.

• Madd rules – Stretching for four or six harakats depending on the type of elongation.

• Qalqalah – The bouncy letters (ق ط ب ج د).

All of this comes together to perfect our recitation, step by step.

Next week, we’re diving deeper into Ikhfa, the biggest category of Nun Sakin and Tanwin rules. It’s all about blending the Nun sound smoothly into the next letter without fully merging it.

• Stages of Life:

• Childhood: Play (healthy and essential for learning).

• Teenage: Entertainment (forming identity through interests).

• Life Purpose:

• Worldly life is temporary amusement; true focus should be on the Hereafter.

• Consolation to the Prophet ﷺ:

• Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was deeply hurt by insults but comforted by Allah.

• Reflect deeply on sacrifices made by the Sahaba.

🌙 Week 5: Ayat of the Week – Surah Ar-Rahman (Ayah 37-45) 📖

📍 Reminder: The 10th of Ramadan – One-Third of the Month Has Passed

Alhamdulillah, today marks the 10th of Ramadan, meaning we have already passed one-third of this blessed month. This is a moment to pause, reflect, and renew our intentions for the remaining 20 days.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Whoever fasts in the month of Ramadan with faith and expecting reward only from Allah, Allah will forgive all his past sins.” (Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim)

💡 Ramadan is a month of mercy, forgiveness, and salvation from the Fire. The doors of Allah’s mercy are wide open, and there are countless ways to earn multiplied rewards and erase past sins.

We still have 20 more days—20 more opportunities to:

✅ Increase in recitation of the Qur’an

✅ Perform more good deeds

✅ Seek Allah’s forgiveness

✅ Make dua for Jannah and protection from Jahannam

🛑 Let’s not waste a single moment!

📖 Ayat of the Week: Surah Ar-Rahman (37-45)

Now, let’s focus on the Ayat of the Week.

📝 How to Practice This Week’s Ayat

✔ Recite these verses daily – Spend 10-15 minutes each day reading them.

✔ Focus on Tajweed – Pay attention to makhraj (articulation) and proper pronunciation.

✔ Reflect on their meaning – These verses remind us of Allah’s justice and mercy.

✔ Make dua – Ask Allah for guidance, forgiveness, and protection from the Fire.

✔️ Almost one-third of Ramadan has passed.

✔️ This is a time to reflect on how we are using our time.

✔️ Are we making the most of these blessed days?

🔹 Tonight’s session continues with Surah Al-An’am (Ayah 30-32).

📖 Verse 30 – Standing Before Allah

🔹 وَلَوْ تَرَىٰٓ إِذْ وُقِفُوا۟ عَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ قَالَ أَلَيْسَ هَـٰذَا بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ قَالُوا۟ بَلَىٰ وَرَبِّنَا ۚ قَالَ فَذُوقُوا۟ ٱلْعَذَابَ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَكْفُرُونَ

🔹 “And if you could see when they stand before their Lord! He will say: ‘Is this not the truth?’ They will say: ‘Yes, by our Lord!’ He will say: ‘Then taste the punishment because you used to disbelieve.’”

🔹 The Conversations of the Hereafter

• This is the second major conversation recorded in Surah Al-An’am about the disbelievers after resurrection.

• The first conversation was when they were stopped before Jahannam, and they begged for another chance.

• Now, they stand before Allah Himself.

• Allah asks them directly:

• “Is this not the truth?”

• They will admit: “Yes, by Allah!”

• But their belief at that moment is useless.

• Faith must be accepted before seeing the reality of the Hereafter.

• Seeing and believing is not faith. Faith is believing before seeing.

💡 Lesson: We must recognise the truth and submit to it while we still have the chance.

📖 Verse 31 – The Ultimate Regret

🔹 قَدْ خَسِرَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِلِقَآءِ ٱللَّهِ ۖ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَآءَتْهُمُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ بَغْتَةًۭ قَالُوا۟ يَـٰحَسْرَتَنَا عَلَىٰ مَا فَرَّطْنَا فِيهَا

🔹 “Indeed, those who denied the meeting with Allah have truly lost. Until the Hour comes suddenly, they will cry: ‘Oh, how great is our regret for having neglected it!’”

🔹 The Reality of Regret

• Allah declares true losers as those who rejected meeting Him.

• Qiyamah will arrive suddenly (بَغْتَةً).

• Their regret is deep (يَـٰحَسْرَتَنَا)!

• “Oh, if only we had taken this life seriously!”

• “If only we had listened and obeyed!”

• “If only we had prepared for this day!”

🔹 Understanding the Two Types of Death

1️⃣ Our personal death (ajal): The moment we leave this world.

2️⃣ The final destruction of the universe: The Day of Judgment itself.

• Qiyamah is not a distant reality.

• For every person, their personal Qiyamah is their death.

• The moment of death is a point of no return.

💡 Lesson: Don’t wait for a sign to change. Death can come suddenly—what have we prepared for it?

🔹 Reflection on One Week of Ramadan

🌙 Tonight marks the 8th night of Ramadan!

✔️ One full week of fasting completed.

✔️ Three more weeks to go, including the blessed last 10 nights.

✔️ Why do we long for Ramadan despite its challenges?

• There is a spiritual blessing in this month that we do not experience at any other time.

• Fasting is not just about avoiding food and drink—it’s about self-discipline, purification, and drawing closer to Allah.

• We ask Allah to grant us sincerity, forgiveness, and the opportunity to witness Laylatul Qadr.

🔹 Tonight, we continue with Surah Al-An’am, Ayah 25-30.

📖 Verse 25 – The Quraysh’s Stubbornness

🔹 وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَسْتَمِعُ إِلَيْكَ ۖ وَجَعَلْنَا عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ أَكِنَّةً أَن يَفْقَهُوهُ وَفِىٓ ءَاذَانِهِمْ وَقْرًۭا ۖ وَإِن يَرَوْا۟ كُلَّ ءَايَةٍۢ لَّا يُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِهَا

🔹 “And among them are those who listen to you, but We have placed coverings over their hearts so they do not understand it, and deafness in their ears. Even if they see every sign, they will not believe in it.”

🔹 The Secret Hobby of Abu Jahl & Al-Walid Ibn Mughira

• Despite publicly opposing Islam, Abu Jahl and Al-Walid Ibn Mughira would sneak out at night to listen to the Quran recited by the Prophet ﷺ.

• Why? The beauty of the Quran mesmerised them, but their arrogance prevented them from accepting it.

• Al-Walid ibn Mughira, the best poet in Makkah, admitted:

• “This is not poetry.”

• “This is not magic.”

• “This is something beyond human ability.”

🔹 Yet, they still rejected it. Why?

✔️ Arrogance.

✔️ Fear of losing status and power.

✔️ Tribal rivalry.

💡 Lesson: Some people recognise the truth but refuse to accept it because of their ego.

🔹 Reflection on Ramadan’s First Week

Alhamdulillah, tonight marks the 7th night of Ramadan.

✔️ One week of Taraweeh completed.

✔️ A week of fasting passed so quickly.

✔️ We ask Allah to grant us sincerity, taqwa, and the opportunity to witness Laylatul Qadr.

Tonight, we continue our tafseer of Surah Al-An’am (Verses 21-25).

📖 Verse 21 – The Worst of Wrongdoers

🔹 وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنِ افْتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبًۭا أَوْ كَذَّبَ بِـَٔايَـٰتِهِۦ ۗ إِنَّهُۥ لَا يُفْلِحُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ

🔹 “Who is more unjust than the one who fabricates lies about Allah or denies His signs? Indeed, the wrongdoers will never succeed.”

The Pattern in the Quran: “وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ” – The Greatest Sins

The Quran repeatedly asks “Who is more unjust than…” when referring to major sins:

✔️ Surah Al-Baqarah (2:114) – Stopping people from going to the Masjid and trying to destroy it.

✔️ Surah Al-Baqarah (2:140) – Hiding the testimony of Tawheed (Shahadah).

✔️ Surah Al-An’am (6:21) – Lying about Allah and denying His signs.

💡 Lesson: The greatest injustice is to deny truth knowingly and spread falsehood about Allah.

📖 Historical Context of the Ayah

📌 The Quraysh’s Resistance:

• The Meccan leaders sought to stop Islam through verbal abuse, then physical violence.

• When they failed, they consulted the Jewish scholars of Medina for ways to disprove the Prophet ﷺ.

• Some Jewish scholars, out of jealousy, deliberately misled the Quraysh despite recognizing the truth.

📌 Allah calls them out:

• They knew the truth, yet rejected it.

• They lied about Allah to maintain their power.

• Allah declares: “The wrongdoers will NEVER succeed.”

💡 Lesson: Knowing the truth but choosing arrogance over submission is the greatest loss.

📖 Verse 22-23 – The Fate of the Mushrikeen on the Day of Judgment

🔹 وَيَوْمَ نَحْشُرُهُمْ جَمِيعًۭا ثُمَّ نَقُولُ لِلَّذِينَ أَشْرَكُوا۟ أَيْنَ شُرَكَآؤُكُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ كُنتُمْ تَزْعُمُونَ

🔹 “And on that Day, We will gather them all and say to those who committed shirk: ‘Where are your partners whom you used to claim (had power)?’”

🔹 ثُمَّ لَمْ تَكُن فِتْنَتُهُمْ إِلَّآ أَن قَالُوا۟ وَٱللَّهِ رَبِّنَا مَا كُنَّا مُشْرِكِينَ

🔹 “Then they will have no excuse but to say: ‘By Allah, our Lord, we were never polytheists!’”

🔹 The Mushrikeen’s Last Excuse:

• In this life, they had full confidence in their idols.

• On Judgment Day, they will lie to Allah, claiming they never committed shirk.

• They will be in complete denial out of fear.

💡 Lesson: Some people live in falsehood so long that they even lie to themselves when confronted with the truth.

Investing in the Akhirah & Balancing Dunya

📆 Date: 6th of Ramadan

📖 Discussion Topics: Wealth, capitalism, Islam’s balanced approach, and divine accountability.

🔹 The Reality of Our Time on Earth vs. the Akhirah

🔹 Human lifespan is limited – The maximum biological limit is 120 years.

🔹 Akhirah is eternal – A wise person invests in what is permanent, not just what is temporary.

💡 But does this mean we abandon the Dunya?

No! Islam is a civilization-building religion.

📖 Islam Encourages Productivity & Knowledge

🔹 The first revelation was not about prayer or fasting. It was:

📖 اقْرَأْ (Read!)

🔹 Islam values knowledge – whether religious or worldly sciences.

🔹 Economic productivity is rewarded:

📌 The Prophet ﷺ said that a person who works hard for a living is rewarded like someone striving in jihad.

💡 Islam encourages wealth and progress, but it must serve humanity and not corrupt the soul.

💰 Capitalism, Greed & Wealth Distribution

The Modern Capitalist Worldview:

📌 Today, success is measured by GDP growth, but:

✔️ GDP per capita rises, but wealth distribution worsens.

✔️ 1% of the world’s richest control most of the wealth.

✔️ Poverty is still widespread despite economic growth.

🔹 History of Wealth Distribution:

• 1945-1980: The “Compression Years” – The wealth gap was closing, and public goods (e.g., free university) were more accessible.

• 1980-Present: The gap widens, as capitalism prioritises profit over people.

💡 The danger of unchecked capitalism – Greed has been normalised.

📖 The Islamic Economic Model – Between Capitalism & Communism

🔹 Islam avoids both extremes:

✔️ Communism – Forcing wealth equality through the state.

✔️ Unregulated Capitalism – A system where greed is the driving force.

🔹 Islamic Principles of Wealth:

✔️ Wealth is a test, not the goal.

✔️ Zakat (2.5%) ensures redistribution of surplus wealth.

✔️ Waqf (charitable endowments) supports public welfare.

✔️ Trade & business are encouraged but must be ethical.

💡 Islamic economics is built on justice – wealth circulates, not accumulates in a few hands.

🔹 Introduction to Surah Ar-Rahman

When was it revealed?

📌 Mid to late Makkah period – addressing the Quraysh’s arrogance and denial of Allah’s favours.

Why is this Surah special?

🔹 The Surah begins with the name “Ar-Rahman”

🔹 Unlike most of Allah’s Asma’ul Husna (Beautiful Names) that appear in pairs, Ar-Rahman stands alone.

🔹 A whole ayah is dedicated to just “Ar-Rahman” – a clear signpost for deep reflection.

💡 Ar-Rahman is the most comprehensive name of Allah’s mercy – encompassing all creation, believers and non-believers alike.

📖 First Passage: A Reminder of Allah’s Favours (Ayahs 1-13)

Allah begins the Surah by listing His countless favours upon mankind:

1️⃣ The Quran (أَلرَّحْمَٰنُ عَلَّمَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ)

2️⃣ The ability to communicate (عَلَّمَهُ ٱلْبَيَانَ)

3️⃣ The Sun & the Moon in precise order (ٱلشَّمْسُ وَٱلْقَمَرُ بِحُسْبَانٍ)

4️⃣ The stars & trees in submission (وَٱلنَّجْمُ وَٱلشَّجَرُ يَسْجُدَانِ)

5️⃣ The balance of justice (وَوَضَعَ ٱلْمِيزَانَ)

Allah then challenges humanity and jinn:

“Which of the favours of your Lord will you deny?”

🔹 This ayah (فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ) is repeated 31 times – urging deep reflection.

👥 Two Audiences: Humans & Jinn (Ayahs 14-16)

After addressing humanity, Allah expands the discussion to include the jinn:

Creation of Humans & Jinn

• Humans – created from clay (salsāl), dried and hardened like pottery.

• Jinn – created from smokeless fire (mārij min nār).

💡 Why is this important?

• Clay is simple & cheap – a reminder to stay humble.

• Fire is volatile & destructive – explaining why some jinn (like Iblis) are rebellious.

• Both are accountable before Allah – jinn are also required to follow the teachings of the Prophets.

📌 Who are the Shayateen (Devils)?

• Shaytan is not a species but a title for anyone who encourages evil.

• Shayateen can be from both humans & jinn (Qur’an 6:112).

• A person who promotes corruption unknowingly plays the role of Shaytan!

🌅 The Two Easts & Two Wests (Ayah 17)

🔹 رَبُّ ٱلْمَشْرِقَيْنِ وَرَبُّ ٱلْمَغْرِبَيْنِ

🔹 “He is the Lord of the two easts and the two wests.”

💡 What does this mean?

• Mashriq (مشرق) means place of sunrise and Maghrib (مغرب) means place of sunset.

• The sun does not rise and set in the same place every day – it moves gradually between two extreme points each year.

• Allah highlights His control over the entire universe.

Recap of Previous Ayahs

Yesterday, we explored the two main objections raised by the Quraysh against the Prophet ﷺ:

1️⃣ Demand for a physical miracle – They insisted on seeing a written scripture (Qirtas) instead of just hearing the Qur’an.

2️⃣ False claim that the Prophet ﷺ said he was an angel – A deliberate misrepresentation to discredit him.

Even if Allah granted their demands, they would still reject the message, calling it “clear magic” (سِحْرٌ مُّبِينٌ).

Today’s Focus: Ayahs 12-16

🌍 Who Owns Everything in the Heavens & Earth? (Ayah 12)

Allah now challenges their beliefs:

🔹 “To whom belongs everything in the heavens and the earth?”

🔹 The correct answer is Allah, yet the Quraysh refuse to acknowledge His absolute ownership.

💡 Key Difference Between Creation & Ownership:

• They admitted Allah created everything.

• But they refused to acknowledge that everything still belongs to Him.

📝 This denial allows them to justify disobedience – if they accepted Allah’s ownership, they would have to obey Him.

🌙 Everything Stationary by Night & Day Belongs to Allah (Ayah 13)

🔹 وَلَهُۥ مَا سَكَنَ فِى ٱلَّيْلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ

🔹 “To Him belongs whatever is stationary by night and by day.”

Why mention “stationary at night” and not “active during the day”?

📌 Missing words are intentional – the Qur’an expects us to think and complete the meaning.

📌 This triggers reflection: if we can complete the thought, why can’t we think about the One who created us?

📌 Arabic is deep & precise – sometimes words are omitted, but their meaning remains.

The Arguments of the Quraysh Against the Prophet ﷺ

1️⃣ Argument: “Show Us a Miracle Beyond Words!”

📖 Ayah 9:

“Even if We had sent down a book in writing, and they touched it with their hands, the disbelievers would still say, ‘This is nothing but magic!’”

🔹 The Qur’an was revealed orally, and the Quraysh demanded a physical book to believe in it.

🔹 Allah says that even if He sent down the Qur’an in written form, they would still reject it.

💡 Lesson:

• Disbelievers throughout history have always asked for miraculous signs but still rejected them.

• The true miracle of Islam is the Qur’an itself—a book of intellectual, linguistic, and spiritual miracles.

Historical Context: The Evolution of Paper & Bookbinding

🔹 The word “khirtas” (paper) in this ayah refers to the Egyptian papyrus, which was extremely rare in Arabia.

🔹 Paper, as we know it today, did not exist in Arabia during the Prophet’s time.

🔹 It was the Muslims who first introduced mass paper production after learning from Chinese captives in the Battle of Talas (132 Hijrah).

🔹 This led to the first bookbinding techniques, which allowed knowledge to be preserved and spread efficiently.

💡 Lesson:

• Islamic civilisation embraced knowledge—whether from Chinese, Indians, or Greeks—and used it to advance humanity.

• Muslims never divided knowledge into “Islamic” and “non-Islamic.” If it was beneficial, they adopted it.
