  • Episode 3: Meet Olivia

We are BACK with episode 3! In this episode, we get to know Olivia and learn about her background- she is currently a badass performance and health coach based out of South Korea.

In this episode, you'll hear how Olivia's experience with fitness, body image, body building, CrossFit and more. As a young woman, her negative body image drove her to quit dancing- and it wasn't until years later that she restarted her fitness journey during a year abroad in South Korea.

Olivia loves to read, listen to music, and dance.. but as she dug deeper into the world of bodybuilding and CrossFit as an adult, she found that training, food and the drive to always be doing MORE took over her life. She tells us about what led her to realizing that the bodybuilding needed to stop, and what has now led her to re ignite her love for activities outside of the gym.

You'll hear about her 'breaking point', and how she realized that her obsession with training was taking away from so many other aspects in her life- including hormone issues that lasted for years. We talk about how common hormone issues are in the fitness industry, and how scary it can be to ask for help from a professional when the answer might be 'just stop what you're doing.

STAY TUNED for a future episode in which the Be Well Cartel girl gang digs into our experiences with hypothalamic amenorrhea, and their journeys to recover their hormones.

Olivia is dedicated to helping other women find balance in training and health, and currently lived and works in Seoul, South Korea.

  • Episode 2- Meet Holly

In Episode 2 of the Be Well Cartel podcast, we get to know Holly a bit better. British by origin, Holly spent years living in China, and started out with no fitness background at all! In this episode, you'll hear about her journey from working at art galleries in Beijing to opening and managing one of the biggest CrossFit gyms in China.

Holly's story is fascinating- she suffered from social anxiety when she was younger and never imagined speaking in public, let alone coaching classes in TWO different languages. You'll hear more about how she got her start in the basement of a gym in Beijing, unable to lift a barbell over her head, to becoming a CrossFit coach, nutrition coach and Spartan race devotee.

She shares with us stories of how she got started with Olympic weightlifting, why she had to put her lifting shoes in the oven, and the path that led her back to the UK after years of living in Asia.

We also talk about how important it is as coaches to truly understand where your coachees are coming from, the benefits and disadvantages of working with athletes, and how fear is such a powerful reason to NOT change.

Stay tuned for the next episode, where we round out the 'get to know you' episodes with Olivia's background and story!

  • Episode 1: Meet Gillian

Welcome to episode 1 of The Be Well Cartel podcast with Gillian, Holly and Olivia. We want to give you a chance to get to know us a bit better, so for the first 3 episodes of the podcast we are introducing ourselves to you.

In this episode we get to know Gillian, our favorite Cali girl. We start by diving into how we all know each other- Gillian actually slept in Holly's bed in Shanghai before they even met in person. We chat about how the three of us connected, and you'll hear the funny story of how we came to find each other.

Then we go into how Gillian made her way to Barcelona (where she currently resides) from California.. and why she left a high paying sales job in San Francisco with basically NO clue what to do next. You'll hear about Gillian’s extensive history with CrossFit (as a coach, competitor and participating in a seminar staff internship), why she became a nutrition coach and how she got into Olympic weightlifting.

We also talk about the 'dark side' of nutrition, including macro templates and tracking, which turned from a way to cut weight for weightlifting into an obsession- for all of us! Gillian has since made her way to a more mindful, gentle way of nourishing her body, and implements the tools she has learned with her clients as well.

Gillian shares with us about her own coaching protocols and beliefs and something that is at the centre of the Be Well Cartel as a collective: human-centred coaching vs numbers-based coaching. Towards the end of the episode we riff on the importance of self trust and self compassion as the basis for success in any pursuit of change. Gillan rounds things off with her top 3 resources for getting started with intuitive eating.

Stay tuned for the next episodes, where we dig into Holly and Olivia's background and story!
