Autism and Parenting

Be your child’s advocate

Listen Later

When someone labels or makes assumptions about your child based on their disability, it can be challenging to address the situation effectively. As a parent/caregiver, it is important to correct them as their remarks and your silence might adversely affect the child.
Educate them: Politely and calmly explain to the person that their assumption or label is incorrect or based on misconceptions. Share factual information about your child’s abilities and strengths.
Advocate: Emphasize the importance of seeing your child as an individual with unique qualities, talents, and potential. Encourage the person to focus on your child’s abilities rather than their disability.
Share experiences: If comfortable, share personal experiences or stories that challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about individuals with disabilities. This can help to broaden the person’s understanding and perspective.
Set boundaries: If the labeling or assumptions persist, assertively communicate your discomfort and ask the person to refrain from making such comments or assumptions. It is essential to advocate for your child’s dignity and respect.
Seek support: Reach out to support groups, disability advocacy organizations, or professionals who can provide guidance and advice on how to handle such situations effectively.
Remember, it may not always be possible to change someone’s perspective or behavior. Still, by advocating for your child and promoting understanding, you can help create a more inclusive and accepting environment.
