Beating the Heat Before It Beats You | Episode 445

In Episode 445 of the Survival Punk Podcast, we’re tackling a killer that doesn’t get nearly enough attention: heat. Summer is here, and with it comes record-breaking temps, blackout risks, and real dangers for anyone living in a concrete jungle — or storing gear in a hot vehicle.

This episode is about practical, no-BS strategies for keeping cool at home, surviving heat when you’re out and about, and protecting your gear from cooking in the sun.

Keep Your House Cool (Even When the Power’s Out)

Most people crank the AC and call it a day. But that’s not prepping — that’s wishful thinking. Grid failures are common during heat waves, and your cooling strategy needs to be tougher than that.

  • Block the sun: Close curtains or use reflective window covers during the hottest parts of the day.

  • Cool your body, not the room: Use damp cloths, foot soaks, and wet bandanas. A spray bottle and fan combo works wonders.

  • Go nocturnal: Do chores in the early morning or late evening when the temps drop.

  • DIY cooling: Learn to build a swamp cooler, or grab a battery-powered fan while they’re still in stock.

Don’t wait until the AC dies to figure this out. Plan now, and you’ll sweat a lot less later.

Survival in the Sun: Staying Safe Outdoors

Whether you’re working, bugging out, or just stuck outside, extreme heat changes everything. You can’t push yourself the same way — and if you try, it could be fatal.

    • Wear the right gear: Loose, light-colored clothing that covers your skin. Think shade, not skin exposure.

    • Hydration is critical: If you’re not peeing, you’re dehydrated. Carry more water than you think you’ll need.

    • Salt matters: Electrolytes are just as important as water. DIY mixes or salt tabs work great.

    • Make shade: Tarps, umbrellas, ponchos — always have something that creates cover.

Heatstroke isn’t something you walk off. Know the signs, know your limits, and prep your pack accordingly.

Bug Out Bags and Extreme Heat Don’t Mix

Let’s talk gear. Your bug out bag might be mission-ready — but if it’s been sitting in your car through 100-degree days, it might be more liability than lifesaver.

Here’s what extreme heat does to your gear:

      • Batteries leak, swell, or fail

      • Meds lose potency or go bad entirely

      • Energy bars melt, cans burst, plastic breaks down

      • Water bottles can leach chemicals or even rupture

If your bug out bag lives in your vehicle, you must rotate supplies regularly. Better yet, keep it in your house and carry it out with you — especially when summer hits.

        Final Thought: Heat Kills, Fast

Preppers love talking about cold weather survival, but heat deserves the same respect. You can’t layer up or “build a fire” to survive 110° in the shade. Heat is silent, fast, and unforgiving — especially if you ignore it.

Listen to Episode 445 and get your plan in place before the heat wave hits. Because prepping isn’t just about winter storms and EMPs — it’s about whatever tries to kill you next. And this summer? That’s probably the sun.
