We had the 'distilled' pleasure of interviewing Vern Brown of Duneland Distillery. Forged from John "Happy Jack" Hamrick, who was at once a Baptist minister and a moonshiner, the family distilling traditions were passed down through the generations. Now it's Vern Brown's turn, the great-great-grandson of "Happy Jack".
Duneland Distillery is housed in an old 23,000 sq ft. bowling alley at 124 N. 8th Street. Featuring a tasting bar and cocktail bar, the distillery has a wide variety of spirits including artisan vodka, “not your grandpa’s” Gin (which will be infused with elderberry, rose petals and other delicious flavors), tequila, moonshine and more. You will also be able to get specialty cocktails and mixed drinks if you visit. The cost of any tastings can go towards the purchase of bottles, which will also be available.
“The tastings at Duneland Distillery will be a really neat experience,” said Vern, “different than any of the other distilleries around.”
Just like Chesterton Brewery, part of Duneland Distillery’s mission will be to give back to veterans and local heroes.
