Many of us remember the time when we cast our eyes on our first vinyl record, perhaps during a visit to a small record store in Flinders St Melbourne or Oxford St, Sydney or a number of other cities in Australia and New Zealand.

The atmosphere was electric, buzzing with infectious enthusiasm and a passion for the music.

Central Station Records was not just a record label or a record store, it was an institution that was a driving force in creating Australia’s thriving dance music scene….in more ways than one.

Unbeknownst to them, in 1968 the Federal Government had passed a law that made it illegal to import music, books and videos. This hindered local record stores and businesses struggling to find a place in an industry controlled by powerful record companies who refused to invest in electronic dance music…until Central Station Records took the fight all the way to Parliament and faced “Goliath” head on.
