Spiritual deception is real, and false teaching doesn't always look obviously dangerous. In 1 Timothy 4:1–5, Paul warns that some will depart from the faith by following deceptive spirits and false teachers. Their message may sound spiritual, but it contradicts God's Word and distorts the goodness of God's creation and the gospel. How can we recognize the counterfeit? By knowing the genuine article. God's Word exposes falsehood and reminds us that every good gift comes from our good Creator and is meant to be received with thanksgiving. Most importantly, salvation is not something we earn through religious performance or self-denial. False religion says DO; the gospel says DONE. False religion says ME; the gospel says JESUS.

What makes a church healthy? In 1 Timothy 3:14–16, Paul gives us a picture of the church as God's household, the church of the living God, and the pillar and support of the truth. A healthy church understands what it is, whose it is, what it is for, and who it is ultimately about. The church is not a business, social club, or gathering centered on our preferences. It exists to uphold and proclaim God's truth—and that truth is ultimately about Jesus Christ. He came in the flesh, was vindicated, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, and exalted in glory. A healthy church puts the glory of Jesus Christ on display.

In 1 Timothy 3:8–13, Paul describes the character God expects from those who serve as deacons. Deacons are not called to be extraordinary people, but ordinary Christians whose lives are being shaped by an extraordinary Savior. They must be people of integrity, proven faith, faithful relationships, and humble service. Their ministry may often happen behind the scenes and go unnoticed, but it is deeply valuable to the health and mission of the church. Ultimately, their model is Jesus, who "came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." This sermon challenges us to value faithfulness over flashiness and reminds us that while not everyone is a deacon, every Christian is called to serve like one.

In Colossians 3:12–14, we are reminded that our new identity in Christ calls for a new way of living. As God's chosen, holy, and beloved people, we are to clothe ourselves each day with the character of Christ—compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. These gospel virtues are not merely attitudes but essential garments that enable us to bear with one another, forgive one another, and live together in genuine Christian community. Above them all, we are to put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. The unity of the church is not produced by personalities or preferences but by believers daily putting on Christ and displaying His character toward one another.
