In today's episode, Dr. Frances Abderhalden talks about the importance of mental health, how ingrained mental health takes a back seat to physical health, how to encourage everyone to take breaks and well-being time and also, how great Cal State LA is in being open to conversation with students about mental health.
Dr. Frances Abderhalden is the National Expert of Jail Suicide. Find out how she handles conversations in the full episode.
Dr. Abderhalden holds both a doctorate and master’s degree in criminal justice. Her research centers on institutional corrections, specifically jail incarceration. Her primary research focus is on suicidality and the mental health impact of incarceration. This work has led her to partner with multiple large jails in multiple states. Additionally, Dr. Abderhalden’s survey development has helped to reframe correctional research and realign with the unique qualities of shorter-term jail incarceration. She serves on two consortiums, one national and one international, as a suicidology expert. Dr. Abderhaldens’s work has been published in empirical journals, like Crime and Delinquency and the International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology. She works closely with jail administration to help provide suggestions for policy implications related to suicide prevention and reentry concerns. Her teaching philosophy is heavily based in equity learning, with a focus on the wellbeing of her students and their continued learning over quantitative outcomes.
