Do you ever find yourself exhausted, but you just keep pushing? Or you finish one big project, just to jump into the next thing—without taking the needed rest? Or is that just me?
I’ve brought my favorite therapist, Brenda Stewart, back to talk about how Shalom (the wholeness, peace, and flourishing we’re created for) is disrupted by burnout and overwhelm. I ask Brenda about a “friend” who can never rest after a big project (spoiler: it’s me). And of course we look at someone in Scripture who crashed and burned, and God’s surprising prescription for that person.

I’ve spent the better part of my life trying to whip my muscles into shape. I’ve done workout series like Buns of Steel, Abs of Steel, and Thighs of Steel (hello early ‘90s). I’ve done P90X, Insanity, and Turbo Jam. To this day I have a subscription to BeachBody. But there is one muscle that seems harder than any other to tone—my mind.
According to both God’s Word and modern-day neuroscientists, we know that shaping our minds is possible. Which is great news for those of us who struggle with fear and anxiety! Although Scripture assures us that we have the power to transform our minds, it never says it will be easy. The imagery is filled with battle language like “taking thoughts captive,” and “waging war.”
In today’s episode, I share 12 practices that help us fight fear and anxiety, so we can walk in shalom. (In the beginning I promise 13, but it’s actually 12… oops. What’s a practice you would add?)

What do you do when life shatters into a million pieces? Most of us have stared down a moment like that—or we one day will. What then?
Lisa Appelo is a woman who has been there. When her husband Dan died suddenly, she found herself grieving the love of her life while raising seven children on her own. In this tender conversation, Lisa shares how God sustained her in the darkest days of grief—not by removing her pain, but by meeting her in the midst of it.
If you are walking through the deep waters of grief, Lisa is a gentle companion who will remind you that you don’t have to pretend you’re fine. The God of comfort sees you, moves toward you, and will carry you through.

What does shalom really mean?
We often translate the Hebrew word shalom simply as “peace,” but Scripture gives us a much bigger and more beautiful picture: wholeness, flourishing, harmony, communion with God—the way things ought to be.
In this introductory episode of the Shalom Series, we’ll trace this idea from creation and the brokenness of Genesis 3 to the peace Jesus offers us in the middle of a world that is still not as it should be.
We’ll also look at what Scripture says about shalom in Judges 6, Jeremiah 29, John 14, Philippians 4, and Numbers 6—and why our bodies, minds, relationships, and spiritual lives all matter as we move toward wholeness.
Over the next several months, we’ll explore the things that disrupt our shalom—including grief, anxiety, burnout, overwhelm, trauma, and loneliness—and ask:
• What disrupts our shalom?
• What does Scripture say about it?
• What can psychology and therapy help us understand?
• What helps restore shalom?
• How does God invite us back toward Him?
Because we weren't simply created to survive. We were created for shalom.

Podcasters Sandy Cooper and Mary K. Tiller (hosts of Writing Off Social) step in to interview Teresa Whiting about her brand-new Bible study, Seen—available now on Amazon.
Order Seen: How God Pursues the Overlooked and Uninvited:

Seen explores the stories of six women in Scripture who were overlooked, silenced, or cast aside by the people around them, yet never once overlooked by God.
Teresa opens up about the years-long journey of writing this study, the story that was hardest for her to write, the surprising way this book ended up ministering to her own heart, and what she hopes women will take away from it.

Hey friend, this episode is going to be a little bit different! Think of it as you and I taking a long walk on the beach or sitting down over an acai bowl.
I'm sharing something I'm loving, something I'm learning, something I'm lamenting, something I'm leaning into, and something I'm letting go of. Because sometimes we just need to talk about ALL. THE. THINGS.

Do you ever wonder what you would do if you were faced with the atrocities of WWII? I do! Would I have stood by as millions of innocent victims lost their lives at the hands of the Nazi regime? Or would I have been one of the brave souls fighting for their freedom—even at the risk of my own life?
Join me for a fascinating conversation with one of my favorite authors! Mark Buchanan’s newest novel is based on the true story of a tiny French village that sheltered over 2,500 Jewish refugees during World War II. In our conversation, Mark unpacks what motivated these ordinary people to choose radical hospitality over safety.
