What if the dental appointment could become one of the most important opportunities to recognize an undiagnosed sleep or airway disorder?
In this episode, dental hygienist and educator Katrina Sanders introduces a comprehensive approach to airway and sleep management, examining how oral healthcare professionals can identify warning signs and guide patients toward appropriate care.
She explores:
✨ How untreated sleep disorders can affect safety, performance, and mental health
✨ The difference between sleep duration and restorative sleep
✨ Why nasal breathing matters for oral and systemic health
✨ Facial, oral, and postural signs associated with chronic mouth breathing
✨ How airway dysfunction may appear in children and adults
✨ The relationship between sleep disruption and chronic health concerns
✨ How tethered oral tissues fit within a broader airway evaluation
✨ The role of dental professionals in screening and referral
✨ Why treatment requires ongoing assessment, planning, and maintenance
Katrina shares the deeply personal reason behind her dedication to airway education. In 2018, she unexpectedly lost her mother, Linda Marie Sanders, following an airway obstruction. Her experience inspired this educational series and strengthened her commitment to helping dental professionals recognize signs that might otherwise be missed.
Rather than asking dental teams to diagnose sleep apnea, Katrina encourages them to observe, screen, document, educate, and connect patients with the appropriate medical and interdisciplinary providers.
Katrina Sanders is passionate about elevating the dental profession by creating a movement that educates, encourages, and empowers the industry. Known as the “Dental WINEgenist™,” she combines her commitment to dental excellence with her passion for wine.
As Clinical Liaison for AZPerio, Katrina collaborates with leading periodontists in surgical care. She is also the founder of Sanders Board Preparatory, a published author, and the recipient of several professional honors, including the Denobi Award and the RDH Magazine Award of Distinction. Her philanthropic work includes humanitarian dental care, animal welfare, and organ donation advocacy.
This episode challenges clinicians to look beyond teeth and consider what the mouth, airway, medical history, and patient experience may reveal about sleep and whole-body health.
🎧 Bring these insights into your next patient conversation and begin asking better questions about breathing and sleep.
