Dr. Denise Reid is an associate professor of education at Biola University in Southern California. In her conversation with Keith and Brian, she explains the relevance of understanding the intersectionality of diversity identities. In this episode, listeners will understand a broader definition of diversity as Dr. Reid describes how she navigated a career as a student and an accomplished academic while experiencing the feelings and encounters of three diversity identities: race; gender; and disability.

For the first time Keith and Brian host a guest, Brian's  son, Casey, during an episode of BECK. Casey attended Urbandale High School where Brian was assistant principal and shares memories of those school years. Casey's fascinating story includes a description of coming out and compares the occasion to a metamorphosis, like a butterfly leaving a cocoon. Learn about Casey's hopes that one day we can all be defined as human with little trepidation about race, religion, or gender distinctions. Casey is continuing his own education with the intention that as a counselor specializing in supporting LGBTQ youth, he can impact in helpful ways both straight and LGBTQ children.

The shooting in the Buffalo TOPS story has at times been attributed to mental illness. Keith and Brian want to be sensitive to Americans who benefit from mental health support, but does dismissing the shooting at the TOPS store in Buffalo as a mental health issue ignore the hate that was directed at the black population shopping that day? 

Many educators faced social challenges as students returned to face to face instruction after COVID. Brian and Keith talk about how a welcoming environment helps kids want to be part of your school.

Keith describes his journey from being bussed from his community and neighborhood school to being the first black administrator in a high school made up of ninety percent white students. The episode will inform, inspire, and encourage black students to pursue the fulfillment of a career in education and communicate how principals, teachers, coaches, and directors can support.
