In the late autumn of 2018, Luna stopped at the Twin Pines Motel outside of Deming, New Mexico. The motel was nearly empty, the desert cold and silent. But on the second night, she noticed a jackrabbit sitting perfectly still in the parking lot, watching her room. It was there every night after sunset, never moving, never blinking. The motel clerk had a strange name—Mrs. Ocher—and when Luna asked about the rabbit, Mrs. Ocher said it was just a rabbit. But the way she said it made Luna feel like she had asked the wrong question. Over three nights, the rabbit never moved, never left, and on the night before Luna checked out, she saw something else—the rabbit's shadow stretching long across the asphalt, even though the streetlight was directly overhead. A story about watching, about being watched, and about what happens when you look too long into the dark.
