In today's episode the group increases their friendship ratings by discussing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Continuing right where the story left off on Remake, we have a whole slew of new settings, side quests, and story bits to chomp through with a varied selection of music both new and old to cover all the bases. So we're back with Axiom Verge 2! Today Joshua walks us through this 2021 metroidvania prequel. As with Axiom Verge previous covered here, this game was developed, published, and composed by Thomas Happ. A lot of the similarities end there though as there's a heavy divergence from the heavy synythetic chiptunes with a whole new sound from Happ as Joshua supplies trip hop beats, melodic world music, and the beautiful vocals by Mayssa Karaa lending a bit of spirited life into the mix. A new direction in terms of game and music, it largely remains somehow perfectly aligned with the magic Happ composed before.
[Around the 1:00:00 mark we experience a bit of microphone shenanigans for Laura and Chris. We tried to correct it in post to the best of our ability, but apologies for the wonkiness ahead of time!]

SNES JRPG royalty comes barreling back to Beeps Bops and Beats as Chris brings us Secret of Mana, a 1994 action-RPG developed and published SquareSoft. Composed by Hiroki Kikuta, this beloved entry in the Mana series was the first to land in the US with its own moniker while enthralling a generation with the promise of high adventure. Ancient sorcerers, flying on dragons, finding legendary weapons, and saving the world from total annihilation. Everything one could ask for in a (mostly) child friend story supported by some of the most evocative and original music available on the SNES in its heyday. Spooky tunes, aggressive boss music, and music full of longing and hope. Really there's something in here for everyone.

As varied as the creatures are, the music runs the gamut of frenetic battles on space whales, deep beats from the streets, dazzling Hollywood movie stardom, and even a bit of grand classical orchestra as we bring our favorite tracks across the decades and share some of the weirdest corners of the fandom.

Eager to bring more cyberpunk to the podcast, Chris is coming in today with 2016's waifu booze-em-up VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action. Developed by Sukeban Games, published by Ysbryd Games, this indie hit is composed by Michael Kelly aka Garoad. In this dystopian visual novel you sling drinks as a bartender trying to make in a crazy world where talking corgis run companies, android pop singers run the entertainment circuits, and Mega Christmas was saved thanks to a wrestling match against Nega Santa... And your boss may be a secret pro-wrestler? We swear it makes slightly more sense with context, but just barely. Either way the music is a smooth ride as its 80s dark-synth, city pop, EDM, and everything in-between soundtrack powers you through another day in Glitch City at the bar lovingly called Vallhalla.

Link, wake up. You've been snoozing for a century! Laura bringing us Breath of the Wild despite it not having any music somehow? Really though, the soundtrack for this 2017 action-adventure game that developed and published by Nintendo was composed by Hajime Wakai, Yasuaki Iwata, and Manaka Kataoka. Somehow its ambient, yet threatening - but also melancholic and triumphant? Things are getting dicey with the timeline as we explore the latest setting with Link while challenging shrines, divine beasts, and Calamity Ganon after catching a nice hundred year nap and equipped with an swank new digital tablet. Get your maracas ready as Laura helps us ya-ha-ha the secrets of just where this buffet of musical offerings comes from, and just what is that strange beeping coming from the divine beasts..?

The perks of getting old is having a lifetime of gaming under your belt, and today the BBB crew leans hard into that during this Nostalgia Hour(+), sharing with each other beloved games, memories, and music from our collective childhoods. Some of us were Hylian adventurers or blue hedgehogs, others were farmers in remote mountain villages, rapping dogs, or purple dragons and eco terrorists... It takes all kinds, and we definitely pillage our memories for some of the good special stuff musically to share with you all on this episode.

It's a bird! It's a plane! No, wait, it's Laura bringing us Skyward Sword today while riding a massive loftwing in this 2011 action-adventure game, developed and published by Nintendo. Compositions by Hajime Wakai, Shiho Fujii, Mahito Yokota, and Takeshi Hama. Continuing our journey through the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda series, we find ourselves way way up in the skies, but also way way in the past with the start of the timeline where it all began. Meet some frenemies, get kicked off a sky island, create a sword woman, and learn why the cycle of Link, Zelda, and Ganon rages on eternal in todays episode with some of the most epic orchestration we've seen in Hyrule yet.

So what IS the Axiom Verge? Today we found out as Joshua walks us through this 2015 indie homage to Metroid that leans heavily into the retro feel of the genre. Developed, published, and composed by Thomas Happ, this side scrolling action adventure game takes the scientist Trace through a foreign alien world ruled by technology while piecing together what happened to the world you woke up in, and what piece you play in it all. The music ties heavily into the brooding industrial tech heavy setting with an unapologetically 80's vibe carrying us through it up. Come on in and enjoy the ruined world with friends and wild chiptune glitch techno vibes.
