One year later (not to the day), there was a revolution, and Zanzibar "merged" with the country of Tanganyika to form Tanzania. The name Tanzania comes from what is called a clipped compound word. The first three letters of each country, Tan and Zan with the suffix "-ia" which is Latin for "land of."
