Non-musical history for today: 1989 – Nolan Ryan struck out Rickey Henderson to become the first Major League Baseball pitcher to record 5,000 strikeouts. I may have seen that game. If not, I watched many a Rickey Henderson game as I used to love the A's and I loved him.

Non-musical history for today: 1883 – An F5 tornado strikes Rochester, Minnesota. Do you know what else is in Rochester, Minnesota? The Mayo Clinic. That tornado destroyed most of the town and killed a lot of folks. Dr. William Worell Mayo and his sons William and Charles (Drs. Will and Charlie) helped the town and recruited help from a local nursing convent. After the initial peril subsided,  Mother Alfred Moes, the founder of the Sisters of Saint Francis of Rochester, Minnesota (the convent), approached the Mayos about the church raising the funds for a new clinic if the Mayos would agree to be the resident physicians and surgeons. They agreed with a handshake. BAM! History made.

Non-musical history for today: 1991 – Estonia, occupied by and incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1940, issued a decision on the re-establishment of independence on the basis of legal continuity of its pre-occupation statehood. This took me way deep into a rabbit hole, but if you read more into it, the socio-political ramifications of the Soviet Union, some of which are still happening today (Ukraine, anyone?), was a horrible blight on recent history. Unless, of course, you were a benefactor.

Non-musical history for today: There are two because I find it interesting that the exact same thing happened (in different parts of the world but not really) on the same day, 80 years apart.

1612 – The "Samlesbury witches", three women from the Lancashire village of Samlesbury, England, were put on trial, accused of practicing witchcraft, one of the most famous witch trials in British history.

1692 – In Salem, Province of Massachusetts Bay, five people, one woman and four men, including a clergyman, were executed after being convicted of witchcraft.

Once more, persecution for something we don't understand.

Non-musical history for today: 1958 – Vladimir Nabokov's controversial novel Lolita is published in the United States. A lot of controversy surrounded (and still surrounds) that book. I get it. Did you know that Spandau Ballet's "True" is referencing this book? Seaside arms, pills on the tongue, etc. All inspired by this book. And, of course, one of the greatest Police songs ever, "Don't Stand So Close To Me," which references "that famous book by Nabokov."

I know I post a lot of religious history, especially for an "atheist." But I find the whole thing fascinating. How something I find so hard to believe has developed and shaped history, both atrocities and goodness.

Non-musical history for today: 1920 – Ray Chapman of the Cleveland Indians was beaned on the head by a fastball thrown by Carl Mays of the New York Yankees. The next day, Chapman became the second player to die from injuries sustained in a Major League Baseball game. The requirement for batting helmets didn't happen until 1971, even though they had been around since the late '50s. And even then, veterans could choose to wear the cloth hats with special liners. The last MLB player to bat only wearing a cloth cap was Boston's Bob Montgomery in 1979.
