Non-musical history for today: 1794 – Eli Whitney was granted a patent for the cotton gin. This was simultaneously a good and bad thing. Good because it made cotton farming more productive and profitable. However, because Whitney never invented the machine to harvest cotton: it still had to be picked by hand. The invention has thus been identified as an inadvertent contributing factor to the outbreak of the American Civil War. That is a good thing because the war put an end to slavery. So, good and bad in one machine.

Non-musical history for today: 1770 – Five Americans, including Crispus Attucks, were fatally shot by British troops in an event that would contribute to the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War five years later. The victims were: Samuel Gray, James Caldwell, and the aforementioned Crispus Attucks died instantly. 17-year-old Samuel Maverick was struck by a ricocheting musket ball at the back of the crowd and died early the next morning. Irish immigrant Patrick Carr was shot in the stomach and succumbed two weeks later from the wound.
