Before The Noise

Romans 14:17-23 reminds us that the Kingdom of God is a whole lot bigger than what's on your plate. Paul challenges us to stop confusing personal freedom with spiritual maturity. Just because you can do something doesn't mean love requires you to do it.

In Romans 14:13-23, Paul takes aim at one of our favorite Christian hobbies: being technically right while making everybody around us miserable. Christian liberty is real, but maturity means knowing when love matters more than exercising your rights.

Somewhere along the way, Christians got really good at monitoring everybody else's Christianity. Romans 14:1-12 tells us to put down the clipboard. Paul draws a line between biblical truth and personal conviction, challenges both legalism and arrogance, and reminds us that Jesus already has the Judge position covered.

Romans 13:8-14

Paul manages to cover love, debt, adultery, drunkenness, fighting, jealousy, getting dressed, and the end of the age in seven verses. His message is simple: you owe people love, you don't have time to keep playing with darkness, and if you're going to call yourself a Christian, it's time to put on Christ and live like morning is coming.

In this study, we'll unpack what it means to fulfill the law through love, why salvation is "nearer" than when we first believed, and why Paul tells believers to wake up, throw off the works of darkness, and stop making provision for the flesh.

What does the Bible actually mean when it says to "submit to governing authorities"? Does Romans 13 teach blind obedience to government, or is there a line Christians cannot cross? In Romans 13:1-7, Paul tackles authority, obedience, conscience, taxes, honor, and our ultimate allegiance to God.

Romans 12:9-21 is where Paul stops letting us talk about how transformed we are and starts checking the receipts. Genuine love. Honoring others. Serving faithfully. Helping people in need. Blessing the people who come against you. Refusing revenge. Feeding your enemy instead of fantasizing about their downfall. Apparently, "living sacrifice" wasn't just a metaphor.

Everybody loves the idea of being a "living sacrifice" until they realize sacrifices don't get to negotiate the terms. In Romans 12, Paul takes eleven chapters of deep theology and finally says, "Therefore…" In other words, now that you know what God has done for you, what are you going to do about it?

We'll unpack what it actually means to put your whole life on the altar, stop letting the world squeeze you into its mold, and allow God to renovate the way you think. Then Paul makes things even more uncomfortable: stop thinking you're the most important person in the room, figure out where you fit in the Body of Christ, and actually use the gifts God gave you.

Just when you think you have God's plan figured out, Paul reminds you that God wasn't waiting on your whiteboard presentation. In Romans 11:25-36, we tackle one of Paul's biggest mysteries: Israel's partial hardening, "all Israel will be saved," God's irrevocable calling, and a mercy big enough to leave everybody without room to brag.

Apparently, getting invited to the party does not mean you get to insult the people who were there before you.

In Romans 11:11-24, Paul explains how Israel's stumbling opened the door for the gospel to spread among the Gentiles, and then immediately tells the Gentiles not to get cocky about it. You are a wild branch that got grafted into somebody else's tree. Maybe don't start criticizing the landscaping.

In this study, we'll talk about Israel's stumbling, God's faithfulness, the kindness and severity of God, and why grace should make us grateful instead of arrogant.

Israel had the promises, the prophets, the Scriptures, the history, the covenant, and every spiritual advantage imaginable… and still managed to miss the Messiah standing right in front of them. In Romans 11:1-10, Paul reminds us that God hasn't abandoned His people, grace can't be earned, and religious familiarity is no substitute for faith. It's a sobering warning for anyone who thinks knowing all the right things automatically means their heart is in the right place. Turns out you can be surrounded by truth and still become really good at not seeing it.
