Romans 3:1-8

If religious privilege cannot save us, does it have any value? If God's people are unfaithful, does that make God's promises unreliable? In Romans 2:12-29, Paul turns his attention to one of the most dangerous forms of spiritual deception: believing that knowing the truth is the same thing as living it. Knowing God's Law, carrying the right religious identity, and displaying the right outward signs cannot make a sinful heart righteous.

Romans 2:6-11

God does not grade on a curve, accept spiritual resumes, or show favoritism.

In Romans 2:6-11, Paul delivers a sobering truth: God "will repay each person according to what they have done." But does that mean we are saved by our works? Not at all. Paul is building the case that our works reveal what we love, whom we serve, and where our allegiance truly lies.

It is easy to see the sin in everybody else. It is much harder to recognize the same rebellion hiding behind our own respectability.

In Romans 2:1-11, Paul turns his attention from the obvious rebellion of the world to the dangerous self-righteousness of the person sitting in judgment over it. He exposes hypocrisy, warns us not to mistake God's patience for His approval, and reminds us that the judgment of God is perfectly righteous and completely impartial.
