So what is a university press? Well it’s an extension to an academic institution that simply publishes content. They are different to commercial publisher as they are not-for-profit and often subsidized by their institution to compensate the shortfall. They’ll publish scholarly content like books and journals and target a smaller audience with a regional or subject focus and most offer open access content. They support publishing efforts of their own institution’s researchers or the wider researcher community. They are aligned to the institution’s mission and objectives as well as work closely with or even in the university library.

What is Plan S?

Hi this is Lou Peck from the International Bunch and I’m going to talk to you about Plan S in under 60 seconds.

Launched in September 2018 by Science Europe, Plan S requires that scientists and researchers who benefit from public funded research institutions and organizations have to publish their work in compliant open access journals or platforms by 1st January 2020. This open access science is supported by a consortium called cOAlition S which was launched by 13 national research funding organizations, 3 charitable foundations from 13 countries, together with the European Commission and the European Research Council. Funders are still being invited to join.
