  • BEHIND THE LENS #160: Featuring John T. Woods
It's a sweet smelling potpourri of cinematic delights on this episode of BEHIND THE LENS thanks to our special guest, actor JOHN T. WOODS, and exclusive interviews with MAX WINKLER & ZOEY DEUTCH talking FLOWER, while GREG SESTERO fills us in on his new film with Tommy Wiseau, BEST F(R)IENDS. (Unfortunately, we ran out of time for our interview with IMELDA STAUNTON, but you'll hear that interview in the coming weeks.) First up hear GREG SESTERO go in-depth as he talks about his new film, BEST F(R)IENDS. Written by Greg and starring himself and Tommy Wiseau, Greg's passion for storytelling and filmmaking are evident thanks to very thoughtful and genuine conversation and analysis of his own work. Talking about character and story development, you'll appreciate Greg's considerations for details both within story and visuals. And many may be surprised to hear what Greg has to say reflects on his involvement in the cult classic, THE ROOM. Then you'll get a touch of the comaraderie and collaborative efforts of writer/director MAX WINKLER and actor ZOEY DEUTCH with an excerpt of our exclusive interview talking about FLOWER. Focusing on the film's cinematography with Max speaking to it as a director and Zoey discussing it from the point of view as an actor, provides interesting insight for all. But get ready for our special guest, veteran actor JOHN T. WOODS who joins us at the midpoint of the show. One of our favorite conversations to date on #BTLRadioShow, John talks not only about the craft and his new film DEAD BULLET, but his trajectory as an actor, considerations and decisions, and stepping into the diversity now afforded him as a leading man in multiple genres.

  • BEHIND THE LENS #158: Featuring Luke Shirock

First up, take a listen to film critic debbie elias' pre-recorded exclusive interview with director JOHANNES ROBERTS as they go in-depth about Johannes' latest film, THE STRANGERS: PREY AT NIGHT. Cinematography, sound design, needle drops, casting, horror films, and more, no stone is left unturned. And for all the BAILEE MADISON fans out there, you'll love hearing what Johannes has to say about his leading lady. With barely a spoken word to be heard, TOMMY BATTLES THE SILVER SEA DRAGON is an exquisitely composed work that starts with the music and lyrics, on through choreography and cinematography, captivating the audience with sight and sound. As writer/director/composer and one of the film's stars, newcomer LUKE SHIROCK dove headfirst into the project, starting with the music. • BEHIND THE LENS #157: Featuring Dick Cavett, Ray Parker, Jr. and Fran Strine
Who ya gonna call on for a day of legends on BEHIND THE LENS? How about DICK CAVETT, RAY PARKER JR, and FRAN STRINE for starters! Truly a legendary BEHIND THE LENS, RAY PARKER JR and director FRAN STRINE are first up as they talk about their latest venture – WHO YA GONNA CALL – a documentary on the life of Ray Parker Jr. Starting up a friendship during the making of Fran's acclaimed documentary "Hired Gun", it was all of Ray's anecdotes and history that made Fran realize then that Ray Parker Jr needed a full feature in order to document and share his story with the world. Always a joy to have Fran Strine on BTLRadioShow, he's back and this time has Ray with him as they announce and talk about the launch of their crowdfunding campaign on INDIEGOGO for WHO YA GONNA CALL – which starts at midnight on Tuesday, March 6, 2018. One listen to these two and you'll be in stitches and not only want to see this documentary made, but jump on INDIEGOGO and donate to the seed money campaign. Filmmakers will appreciate Fran's love for Kodak who are helping out so the documentary can be shot on film while Ray is a pure delight talking about teaching Stevie Wonder to drive, sleeping with the light on, and his fear of (*GASP*) ghosties and things that go bump in the night! And although we could talk with Fran and Ray all day, we bid them adieu to make room for legendary interviewer and talk show host, DICK CAVETT. With a career spanning five decades, the 11 time Emmy nominee and three-time winner, is on hand to talk about his new documentary – ALI & CAVETT: THE TALE OF THE TAPES – which has a debut screening on March 11th at SXSW. Talking about a friendship that developed over the years and spanned decades, Dick gives us just a hint of the casual ease that not only made him a renowned interviewer, but how he became friends with Muhammad Ali, and what you can expect to learn in the documentary. While the documentary itself is a "must see", listening to Dick Cavett on BTLRadio Show is a "must listen." Anecdotes abound, as does some serious discussion about Ali's place and influence in the world, and Dick's heartfelt words on the loss of Ali. And classic films will thoroughly enjoy hearing Dick Cavett talk about (and imitate) Katharine Hepburn as we delve into some sidebars beyond the documentary. But before hearing from our very special guests, how about some clips of what Spirit Award winners Jordan Peele, Allison Janney and Agnes Varda had to say in the press tent following their Spirit Award wins on Saturday!

  • BEHIND THE LENS #156: Featuring Michele Remsen, Matt Porter and Max Azulay
Dysfunction, hypochondria, and comedy are the watchwords for this episode of BEHIND THE LENS as we talk live with MICHELE REMSEN, MATT PORTER, and MAX AZULAY. First up is writer/director/actor MICHELE REMSEN talking about her debut feature directorial TOSS IT, a comedy that in many respects harkens to the early days of screwball comedies with witty and biting banter punctuated with comedic hijinks, most notably "The Philadelphia Story". Listen as Michele talks about the creative genesis of TOSS IT and how it morphed into being a feature film on the page and then onto the screen. Plus, her thoughts on directing, casting chemistry, working with a small ensemble, cinematography and color, and more! At the midpoint of the show, co-writers/co-directors/actors MATT PORTER and MAX AZULAY are on hand talking the fun-filled 5 DOCTORS. Listen as Matt and Max talk about their very long journey into bringing 5 DOCTORS to life, as well as the experience of setting a film in their hometown and revisiting and incorporating their old stomping grounds into the production. And how about their co-creative and co-directing processes? But before you hear from our live guests, take a listen to what Martin Freeman has to say about his role of Agent Ross in the blockbuster BLACK PANTHER.

  • BEHIND THE LENS #154: Featuring Kevin Goode, Jenna St. John, Ron King and Darroch Greer
This week it's time for DINNER WITH THE ALCHEMIST and then a trip into the wild blue yonder with THE MILLIONAIRES' UNIT: THE FIRST U.S. NAVAL AVIATORS IN WORLD WAR I. Our regular listeners first met writer/director KEVIN GOOD and co-writer/actor JENNA ST. JOHN two years ago when DINNER WITH THE ALCHEMIST first hit the festival circuit. With a distribution deal in place and the film now available to all, Kevin and Jenna are back, and this time live in-studio - and with another new production in tow, their 3-month old son Chaucer! Talk about balancing independent filmmaking and family! Jenna goes in-depth into her writing process and the research and historical fact incorporated into this blend of period lushness with alchemy, voodoo and murder, while Kevin talks cinematography, special effects, taking the feature film leap and more. At the midpoint of the show, we go back in history with a look at the fascinating documentary THE MILLIONAIRES' UNIT. The story of a group of Yale students who were the first U.S. Naval aviators first to fly for America in WW1, co-directors RON KING and DARROCH GREER are on hand to talk about their seven-year journey over three continents to bring this piece of history to the masses. From impeccable research to interviews with family descendants and historians to recreations of WWI battles to the importance of including actual aircraft and flight simulations from the day (including a Sopwith Camel on loan from Peter Jackson), our discussion with Ron and Darroch is not to be missed! And an interesting sidebar, many of the filmmakers, including narrator Bruce Dern, have ties to these airmen, many who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

  • BEHIND THE LENS #153: Featuring Jay Silverman and Ethan Warren
It's a mighty tasty BEHIND THE LENS this week thanks to our special guests, director JAY SILVERMAN and writer/director ETHAN WARREN. But before you hear from our directors, how about taking a trip to Wakanda as we go behind-the-scenes of the BLACK PANTHER. In this pre-recorded exclusive interview, take a listen to BLACK PANTHER production designer HANNAH BEACHLER as she talks about creating Wakanda, the importance and use of color, and designing large set pieces while maintaining an intimacy of storytelling. It's lip-smacking goodness tempting your cinematic taste buds as director JAY SILVERMAN talks about his new film, OFF THE MENU. A perfect date night movie for Valentine's Day (February 14, in case you've forgotten), not only is OFF THE MENU beautifully cinematic, it is a glorious showcase for all the foodies out there. Listen as Jay covers everything on the cinematic menu from taking on directorial duties to cinematography to casting to location scouting and, of course, working with food as a visual and emotional centerpiece. And here's a tidbit for you – this is the first director I've spoken with over the past 30 years who was fortunate enough to have the owner of a location, plow and plant an entire chili field just for the film, and have the weather cooperate with vibrant growth! And then playwright ETHAN WARREN joins us live talking about his new film WEST OF HER. His freshman outing as writer/director, Ethan's journey in the making of WEST OF HER mirrors much of the film's tone as well as helping create the experiences we see unfold on screen. You'll enjoy hearing Ethan talk about the importance of collaboration and working with with cinematographer Cameron Bryson in capturing the beauteous imagery of the western United States, including the Rocky Mountains and the Midwest Plains, as well as the magic of editor Mark Cira's work.
