This week we bring you missives from glorious Gaylord, Michigan!


Our great friend Mr. Paul Beachnau (or as we like to call him, Paulie B) is back to share everything he loves about his hometown, including cool things to do downtown during the holidays. Paulie is the director of the Gaylord Tourism Bureau, so trust us when we say he knows what he's talking about. He's also a major fan of winter. Yes, winter! Gaylord lies in the "snowbelt" of Michigan, which makes it an ideal destination for winter adventures across the northern lower peninsula. Paulie shares some tips on making the most out of your time in Gaylord.

Christy Walcott from the Gaylord Tourism Bureau loves to eat, just like we do. She joins us and shares new spots to nosh at as Gaylord's culinary scene grows. You'll still find old favorites like Bennethum's Northern Inn and The Alpine Tavern welcoming guests with classic menus and warm atmospheres. But now you'll also find breweries, authentic Mexican and German spots, sushi and bourbon bars scattered across downtown. Christy's passion for Gaylord always shines through.

We have updates on the fast-approaching winter ski season because ski hills are already making snow and will be open before you know it. Gaylord is home to two ski resorts, the historic Otsego Resort and Treetops, known as Michigan's Most Spectacular Resort. This family-friendly spot is the ideal place for both new and experienced skiers, with over 1500 acres to explore. This year, the resort is offering a new way to learn how to glide down the hills with ease. This week we connect with our friends from Consumers Energy to talk about the upcoming holiday season. We've got info on ways to keep your house warm and cozy this year, things to do in downtown Jackson, information on using electric vehicles when traveling, plus TURKEY TALK.

First up, Brian Wheeler from Consumers joins us to share a few tips and tricks on how to save energy during the holidays, including some great black Friday deals you can take advantage of. He might also share a few favorite holiday memories with us.

It's no secret that we love Jackson, Michigan. We've always felt that you should love Jackson too, so we brought our friend Rachel Buchanan on to share all the cool things you can enjoy in Jackson this holiday season. She also gives us an update on the restaurant scene in Jackson, which is home to Consumers Energy headquarters. Did you know that Jackson is really a foodie town? It is, trust us!

We've been interested in electric vehicles for years now, but have always wondered exactly how they would work with all the miles that we travel. We reached out to Western Michigan University physics professor Paul Pancella to educate us a little bit about this auto option. First, let's just say GO BRONCOS because this guy built his own electric car off of a Honda Civic over ten years ago, and he's been a convert ever since. His passion is inspiring, and information fascinating.

Each week is something new on Behind the Mitten, Michigan's premier travel radio show and podcast. This week we have dispatches from all over Michigan, including a great interview with the retiring head of Pure Michigan, Dave Lorenz.

Dave Lorenz has been leading Pure Michigan, a department of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. The organization is the leading force in Michigan tourism, and Lorenz has been its leader for the last 21 years. Lorenz joins us to discuss what he loved about representing Michigan to the world, and what we can hope for and expect from our next generation. We hope you'll give it a listen, we are putting a lot of faith into our fourth-grade students here in Michigan now.

We also reconnect with our good friend Corey Adkins, a former editor at TV 9&10. He's a lifelong Michigan resident, usually hanging out in the Cadillac region, with lots of regular travel to Paradise. He works at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum as their Communications and Content Creator now, and shares with us some of his favorite places to explore during deer hunting season. We'll hear about Paradise, Seney, Leota, Kalkaska, Lewiston, and maybe even Falmouth.
