The interaction between Our Lord Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well is one of the most beautiful and intriguing events in the gospels. It is marked by the divine charity in the heart of Jesus and the human quest for happiness in a woman who is perhaps scarred by life. 

This Sunday's gospel is one of those worthy of many reflections.

The Transfiguration is a breaking into time of the eternal now. The glory of Christ's body reflects the glory of heaven; and the presence of Moses and Elijah reminds us that Christ seals the Old Testament. This is a defining moment in the grand scheme of our salvation.

The first Sunday of Lent reminds us of the temptations Our Lord faced in the desert as well the reason for our forty days of preparation for Easter. It’s more than recalling. It is also witnessing again the beginnings of the reversal of disobedience which would lead to the ultimate defeat of sin and its consequence, namely death.

Continuing on from where we left off in St Matthew's gospel last Sunday, Our Lord teaches us that one aspect of the Jewish Law remains, and is elevated to a higher level, while the other two aspects of the Law have been fulfilled and perfected. This is an important teaching for us as Christians.

This Sunday's gospel reading is the Beatitudes, the Sermon on the Mount, as it is sometimes called.

The Beatitudes are more than being happy, but rather the charter (along with the Ten Commandments) of the Christian life.

The calling of the first four apostles is not just a nice story, though it is. It is Jesus beginning His church, calling the first of twelve for whom He desired the role of leadership in His church; twelve just like the twelve tribes of Israel because the Church is the new Israel. This role of apostle continues today in every bishop around the world because this was Christ's intention. He did not start something and then let it get by on its own. Rather, the divine plan was there from the very beginning.

The title of today's podcast may lead you to believe that it will be a long one. Not necessarily! The Baptism of the Lord reveals Christ to the nations as the Beloved of the Father, the One on whom the Holy Spirit rests, and the Saviour who is in solidarity with fallen human nature, and with sinners. This is a wondrous feast, not just an event.
