In 1923,George de Hevesy, a Hungarian chemist, initially raised the concept ofradiotracer technique and performed the first radiotracer studies in animals.

In 1926,HerrmanBlumgart and Otto Yens used bismuth-214 to determine the arm-to-armcirculation time in patients, which was the initial use of nuclear medicine inhumans.

In 1946,FDA approved the clinical use of radioisotopes.

Followedwith the worldwide development in nuclear medicine, the 1stradioisotope lab inChinawas set up by Professor Wang Shizhen in 1957. Later in 1958,PekingUnionMedicalCollegeHospitalestablished the first nuclearmedicine department in the country, and started the nuclear medicine career andeducation inChina.
