Members Reviews:
Sherwood's satire is spot on.
The first books of Sherwood's I have read were the Court Duel series, recommended to me by a friend. I am now hooked, but I never expected to be reading something so close to its release date. Being Real is funny with a serious edge, and very well-crafted.
There are some small sci-fi twists to this future which never happened, in which Lys and her family star on reality TV. This satirical short story/novella highlights Sherwood's humor, which is underscored by the narration of the Audible edition, read by Jessica Almasy. In a world where every other website is trying to be a bad version of The Onion, this is actual satire with a futuristic edge. The characters pop out of this narrative. They could easily be people who we know from down the street. There is nothing particularly remarkable about them, but they did agree to be on reality TV...
This is unlike other Sherwood Smith I have read, but it's just as fresh, witty, enjoyable, and like all of her writing it feels like coming home to a good friend, someone who has a good joke to tell, taking place in a reality only a little bit removed from our own.
