Annie Howarth is living a restless life in a restless town. It's 1984 and for a mining community in South Yorkshire, the strikes mean tensions are running high. Then a murdered girl is found on the moors and the anxiety levels are pushed to a dangerous breaking point.
Married to the Chief of Police, Annie should feel safe - William can be secretive, though surely whatever he's hiding is for her own good.
But Annie is keeping her own secrets. Ten years ago the man she loved was ripped from her life in a scandal that still haunts the both of them, and now his return will put her family, her marriage, even her life, at risk.
An atmospheric and suspenseful novel you'll find impossible to put down, from the talented Richard & Judy best seller.

    Excellent!
If you could sum up Your Beautiful Lies in three words, what would they be?
    Historically accurate, absorbing.
What about Colleen Prendergasts performance did you like?
Narration was excellent. You know it is when it never distracts from the story.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes.
    Any additional comments?
The story was set during the 1980s national minors strike. The context was spinkled with points that painted an accurate socio-political climate without overwhelming the story of the individual characters. Douglas wrote with an impressive, and rather beautiful, light touch. Each character was approprately well drawn according to their significance. This is my first by this clearly very skilled author. I look forward to listening to, or reading, her other books.
A good domestic thriller that keeps you guessing
Your Beautiful Lies is a layered story that is narrated well. I have read other books by the author and enjoyed them, hence my choice to purchase this audio book. Douglas's novels tend to revolve around a domestic situation which is somehow linked to a crime, but then the story always fans out to reveal lots of secrets and skeletons in closets.
This story is kicked off when a body is found on the moor and the woman who is killed bares more than a passing resemblance to Annie the police chiefs wife.
The story widens out to focus on lots of little strands, including Annie's marriage to the police chief and how this is tested when her old flame and ex-con boyfriend returns to the small town; in addition there are subplots concerning Annie's relationship with her brother who is being pressured to take part in the miners strike and a strained Mother/Daughter relationship. Over all it kept my attention and whilst the identity of the killer didn't come as a complete shock, it kept me guessing for quite a while. It was refreshing to listen to a book set up north and in the 1980's and I enjoyed the story and narration very much.
    Brilliant
When listening to Colleen Prendergast' excellent reading,of yet another lovely book written by Louise Douglas, I could visualise everything - the moors, the miners' strike and two very different families.
    I second guessed the ending
Enjoyed the story, it was engaging and enjoyable, towards the end I couldn't stop listening
    Good & compelling story
A good story that keeps the listener engaged. Perhaps a little predictable in terms of the sub-context, but entertaining.

Yesterday, Sally was living in an idyllic South African farmstead with her teenage daughter, Gigi. Now Sally is dead, murdered, and Gigi is alone.
But Sally lingers unseen in her daughter's shadow. When Gigi moves in with her aunt, Sally comes, too.
Then Gigi's cousin develops an obsession with African black magic. Now Sally must find a way to stop her daughter from making a mistake that will destroy the lives of everyone.
    Members Reviews:
    Compelling, unpredictable page-turner
Black Dog Summer opens with the horrific death of a free-spirited mother on a farm in South Africa. In a similar vein to The Lovely Bones, we then follow the story through the eyes of her spirit as it floats somewhere between earth and the afterlife. Like the Lovely Bones, the book deals with the aftermath of her death, and how various family members move forward. But this is where the similarities end.
The book is compelling for a number of reasons: we hear about the mother's complex relationship with her sister and the sister's husband; the grief of the daughter she has left behind; and the story of the witchdoctor who is able to see her spirit and foresee danger in the near future. The story is complex, yet light; violent, yet gentle. It's a definite page-turner and something that (while it deals with complex issues) is light enough not to feel drained when you read it.
Miranda's prose is clean, evocative and poetic. She creates a beautiful, real sense of the world she writes about. My favourite part of the book is that it ultimately has an uplifting message. I put it down feeling a bit more positive and hopeful about the world we live in.
A great take - and an unusual one - on family relationships and healing
In a lot of ways this is a story about stories. The way all our stories interweave with each other's - knotting, yanking, braiding and fraying. So, if you like stories about family relationships, this is one for you. Miranda is a great new South African author, but you don't have to be South African to enjoy it.
    Wanted to like this more
I had high hopes for this book and found it really captivating initially. As it lumbered along, though, it seemed to be one stereotype or cliche after another. By the end, I found myself irritated. It inevitably brings to mind "The Lovely Bones", but "Black Dog Summer" is far less readable or, frankly, impressive.
    Four Stars
An intriguing story and a wonderful combination of modern and tradtional South Africa. An easy and enjoyable read!
    Really good
Sally has been attacked and she died, but she isn't completely gone. She can see what's going on in the lives of the people she loves. She's just a shadow and she can't influence anything that happens. Her daughter Gigi has to move in with her aunt, uncle and two cousins. Her cousin Briony isn't very happy with this arrangement as it means she has to give up her room. She didn't know Sally and Gigi very well, so she isn't really grieving. A lot has happened between her mother and her aunt and they weren't keeping in touch. Gigi isn't easy to be around and Briony has no idea how to handle that. Her mother is feeling sad, but there's also something else going on between her mother and father, so there's nobody she can turn to.
Briony loves magic, but when she discovers there is a form of it that really exists she isn't so obsessed with it any longer.

    Publisher's Summary:
Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Pat Barker's powerful and unforgettable story of art and war, Life Class.
Spring, 1914. The students at the Slade School of Art gather in Henry Tonks's studio for his life-drawing class. But for Paul Tarrant the class is troubling, underscoring his own uncertainty about making a mark on the world. When war breaks out and the army won't take Paul, he enlists in the Belgian Red Cross just as he and fellow student Elinor Brooke admit their feelings for one another.
Amidst the devastation in Ypres, Paul comes to see the world anew - but have his experiences changed him completely?
    Critic Reviews:
    "Triumphant, shattering, inspiring." (The Times)
"Barker writes as brilliantly as everwith great tenderness and insight she conveys a wartime world turned upside down." (Independent on Sunday)
    "Extraordinarily powerful." (Sunday Telegraph)
    Members Reviews:
Is war experience justifiable as art?
Pat Barker s heroine refuses on principle to find war a justifiable subject for art, even after being caught up in a raid at Ypres. Her arguments are contrasted with the more conventional story line covered by the male characters. The portrayal of society in the build up to the first World War is much more nuanced than in most novels of the period and the details of the role of an orderly or ambulance driver in Belgium are vivid. The role of the artist in these circumstances makes a useful basis for the exploration of the nature of friendship and love.
Warning - takes time to get into the rhythmn
I discarded this book when I tried to read it - but this audible version made me view the characters and the pace in a different way. (Is that good or bad - I am not sure). Having not found any common ground/compassion/interest with the characters when I read this - I seem to have done so with the audible version. I think this maybe because this is read at an incredibly slow pace (not the pace I would read) - and that's how it works. I don't know but I have enjoyed the audible version enough I will go on to the next part in the story.
    Life Class
This is the first Pat Barker audio book I've listened to and it was a fine production and well read - great story too - I have the next two in print but might just listen to them instead.
    Quite slow
Quite slow, different from her other novels. Not such likeable character's than in the regeneration trilogy.
Pat Barker writing as good as ever
first in second world war trilogy. characters brought vividly to life. well narrated. compelling story. highly recommended.

Wonderful way of looking at the world
Our hero is our eyes and ears to his wonderfully interesting world , Growing up with all those unanswered questions has never been more enjoyable
    Sad coming of age story
A coming of age story that is witty, profound, and sad, it reminds me of a Curious Case of a Dog in the Midnight but with cancer instead of autism. Yet it is original in tone and character and observations on human nature.
I would have hoped for a happy ending
What a beautifully written story. I guess, because it had so many funny moments, I never saw the sad ending coming. A treasure, really!!!
    A great clever funny book
A complex entertaining and very funny read. It was thought provoking, bringing back memories in a new refreshing and funny way. A good read.
    A Life in the Dayâ
Alex is the only one in his primary school who is allowed to wear non-religious headgear. That's because he's been bald since he had his brain surgery. But that doesn't matter much to Alex, even though it could make him feel - as he calls it - "ostrichsized (which is a better word for excluded (because ostriches can't fly so they often feel left out.))" No, Alex is concentrating on getting a scholarship to a good middle school. He's also trying to figure out what's behind all the strange things that have been happening since he had his tumor removed. This is the novel "Ostrich" by Matt Greene.
This is a story that slides. What I mean by this is that what it seems to be at the beginning, turns into something else at the end. Where we think Alex's journey is taking him turns out to be towards somewhere else. And, apparently, even Alex doesn't know exactly what his story is about, until it unfolds. Some have compared this book to Mark Haddon's "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time." What these two books have in common are the mysteries that need to be solved, and the fact that they are told in first person from the perspective of a young boy, both of whom feel like they are outsiders in their own ways. They're also both very intelligent with complex thought processes, and are each studying for an important exam. Furthermore, neither of these two boys can escape their conditions nor the impact that those conditions have on their lives.
But the huge difference here is in the conclusion of these two books (which I refuse to reveal), and why they end so differently, which makes me think that these two books could also be considered exact opposites of each other. (And Alex would be the first one to tell you that for two things to be opposites they have to have quite a few things in common.)
Despite it having a young protagonist as its narrator, I don't believe this should really be categorized as a young adult book.

beautifully written poignant story of a large group of creative friends. it wasnt until i was nearing the end that I realized Waterhouse might be compared favorably to Dickins. there are long passages in the middle that were so sad, I wanted to cry, the characters so realistic that I loved many of them. How far would you go for the one you love the most?
A stormy love affair. A secret. A discovery that changes everything
Louise Fenton flies to a devastated Thailand to search for her mother, missing following the Boxing Day tsunami. The only trace she can find is her mother's distinctive bag. Inside it is a beautifully crafted atlas belonging to a writer named Claire Shreve. But what is the connection between Claire and Louise's missing mum, and can the atlas help Louise find her?
As Louise explores the notes and mementoes slipped between the pages of the atlas she learns the story of a life-changing revelation, a tragedy and a passionate love affair. And she uncovers a secret that nearly destroyed Claire and the man she loved - the same secret her mother has been guarding all these years
    Members Reviews:
Not exactly the story I expected, but still not bad
** spoiler alert ** Pulling inspiration from details of the real life 2004 tsunami that devastated Thailand (as well as several other countries), Buchanan crafts a story about a daughter trying to find answers to the disappearance of her estranged mother, Nora. Louise Fenton hasn't spoken to her mother in several years, not since an argument that escalated surprisingly fast, causing them both to fall into silent treatment with each other since. Now Louise has gotten word that her mother was in Thailand when the tsunami hit, so Louise jumps on the first flight available to try to find her mother -- either to reunite and make peace, or to possibly identify the body. Louise is directed toward a body that matches how she described her mother. While there are similarities, something doesn't seem quite right.... especially when a man crumples over the body crying about "Claire." When Louise inquires about this Claire, what the man tells her ends up sending her on a quest -- as she now has to question that maybe this body is NOT her mother -- to once again seek out her mother's whereabouts and how Claire came to have Nora's belongings (a satchel containing an atlas full of personal letters, photos and other ephemera) on her person.
This essentially makes up the first few chapters. From that point, the storyline flip-flops back and forth between Louise in 2004 and the story of Claire, mostly taking place in the mid-late 1990s. Claire works as a travel writer and a co-editor of a travel magazine. Trying to emotionally regroup after her husband admits to not having his heart in their marriage anymore, Claire takes a writing assignment in Exmoor (UK) where she's working on a piece about a B & B in Exmoor, and its surrounding attractions. Claire strikes up a friendship with Milo, whose odd family owns & operates the B & B. Claire is having a lovely time for a few days until one night when a wedding being held at the inn goes horribly wrong, violence and gunfire breaking out. Milo, having developed feelings for Claire in their short time together, insists she flee the scene before police arrive. Claire reluctantly does leave, going back to the security of her safe if distracted, somewhat inattentive husband. Doesn't work that well though. She can't get Milo or the events of that night out of her mind. Now she has to admit that she's the one with her heart not in her marriage.
