I bought this book because he wrote Grantchester. The plot was unusual and the depth of it surprised me. Very much about an adult family and how even though the relationships seem dysfunctional they are important.
    Two Stars
Not as good as James Runcie's later novels but adequate.
    All are wonderful reads.
This is a very cleverly written book. Several surprises. His style carries into the Grantchester series. All are wonderful reads.
    Five Stars
    Very good story
    Disappointing
Not nearly as interesting or spirited as the books with the character Sidney Chambers.
    Rather dull.

    Title: Bright Lines
Subtitle: A Life in Search of the Beautiful Ordinary
    Author: Jane Devin
    Narrator: Commodore James
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 43 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-10-14
    Publisher: Jane Devin
Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Bright Lines is the four-part life story of an unusually hopeful man, and his search for love, family and connection.
After a rootless childhood, the desire for love and stability becomes both a propelling force and a tender, vacant space in former foster child Easton McNeil's life. Yet the man who keeps moving forward in search of "the beautiful ordinary," is confronted by unexpected curves. He's a virgin who becomes a father. A humanistic dreamer who becomes a business journalist. A practical man who ends up leaving his stable career for a humiliating gig as a sidekick to the notorious shock jock, Cooper Ross.
Encouraged by Ross's oddball fans, Easton plans a cross-country road trip to interview them. Now an empty-nester, the man who's always loved the idea of home sells his and embarks on a wholehearted mission to say yes-to broader horizons, new experiences, and wherever the road might lead him-or at least that's what he believes.
The mission becomes more complicated when he meets the enigmatic Eleanor Conley, and the vacant space that he's spent years trying to mitigate becomes an all-out hunger. But are he and Eleanor meant to be together, or are they meant to be each other's catalysts on the way to somewhere else?
When it comes to human connection, Easton learns that some lines will fade, and others will be penciled in with question marks, but the brightest lines of all inspire love, forgiveness, and redemption.

    A Wee Gem
I listened to this over two nights it was so captivating.
Easton has a horrible life as a foster child, and unwittingly becomes a surrogate dad to a troubled five year old, when he himself is only 25. He puts up with so much from the five year old's mother, but never lets it get him down - giving her all the love, time and money he can afford.
The second half of the book resembles "The Memory of Running" by Ron Livingston (another five star from me, please read it!) as Easton travels across America meeting people who read his blog. He's such a genuine, nice guy, you just want to put him in your pocket and take him home with you. A great listen.

Lys and her family win a chance to be a "real family" on reality TV. That means real money, desperately needed in the rotten economy these days, but they only get that money as long as they stay on the air. What can they do to be real enough to please the viewers?
    Members Reviews:
    Sherwood's satire is spot on.
The first books of Sherwood's I have read were the Court Duel series, recommended to me by a friend. I am now hooked, but I never expected to be reading something so close to its release date. Being Real is funny with a serious edge, and very well-crafted.
There are some small sci-fi twists to this future which never happened, in which Lys and her family star on reality TV. This satirical short story/novella highlights Sherwood's humor, which is underscored by the narration of the Audible edition, read by Jessica Almasy. In a world where every other website is trying to be a bad version of The Onion, this is actual satire with a futuristic edge. The characters pop out of this narrative. They could easily be people who we know from down the street. There is nothing particularly remarkable about them, but they did agree to be on reality TV...
This is unlike other Sherwood Smith I have read, but it's just as fresh, witty, enjoyable, and like all of her writing it feels like coming home to a good friend, someone who has a good joke to tell, taking place in a reality only a little bit removed from our own.

    A nice book
The book was well written and I enjoyed it. However, I found it unclear as to why the daughter was so angry with her mom in first place that she needed to move so far away. That was never clear to my from reading the book. However, the stories of the two generations were beautifully woven together.
    Easy read
A number of themes and they were well intertwined. The first book I read involving the tsunami so it gave a good description of its' aftermath
Novel set in Imber, "The real life lost village" and India
This is quite a haunting read. Itâs about lost landscapes and the feeling of belonging you have to where you live and where you call home. Both places in the novel are taken away from those who live there. Imber was appropriated by the British Military in 1943 when they bought the land and forced those who lived there to leave. The land was then used for years as a practice ground for the soldiers stationed there. Never mind the church with the graves of those who died there or the sense that if youâve lived there all your life, you might want to stay. Itâs a story of people having their landscape robbed from them and itâs a painful story. The locations are the real characters in the story - not how they are described but how they are symbolic - showing the scars of the past and the recovery afterwards
When added to the story of a tsunami, another landscape brutally and forcibly taken from those who lived there, and itâs a story of scars, healing processes and hope amidst destruction and despair. The two stories read as opposite stories of one spectrum yet the two locations come across well and they are very much characters in the novel themselves. The Sea Change is the perfect title for this story and its themes of home, love, loss, and misunderstanding are evoked with the sights, tastes and aromas of two locations from opposite ends of the earth but with a story with a heart at its centre.
I quite enjoyed getting into the story
I'd give this book a 3 1/2 star review. Though it started out slowly, I quite enjoyed getting into the story. I did find that the chapters were at times a bit confusing...trying to keep track of who was the narrator, the mother or the daughter, was at times confusing, but I did manage to keep up with the story and have to say I enjoyed it. The book tells the story of a mother and daughter-Alice the daughter has argued with her Mother Violet and has travelled to a far corner of the world with her boyfriend. On their wedding day, a tsunami hits the remote beach village in India where they are staying and Alice barely survives the onslaught. Searching for her husband James, Alice eventually turns to Violet for help. Violet's story is equally complex.

This is a great story with a wicked twist at the end. Read it in our book discussion group and we all rated it.
A little strange, but nonetheless compelling
Blindsight, is a narration from a now elderly woman Alice, who receives a surprise visit from her brother's grandchild demanding to know what has become of his grandfather.
The book is self described as being "shuffled like a deck of cards" The novel leaps around in time as Alice describes her childhood, marriages and the present. Despite being somewhat waffle-ridden the story is engrossing if unorthodox.
The novel is probably better suited for those who like something a bit alternative, their is no feel-good ending or even justice meeted out. The novel is simply about a family and what happened to them.
I must admit I can't help the feeling there were subtleties that I missed, but I still recommend the book.

    This a great read!
This book was definitely a new genre for me. However when I began reading, I could not put it down. The characters made the book. They were so real that I found myself identifying with each one of them. I laughed, cried and sighed throughout the pages.
I will certainly read this one again.
    Loved it!
I always enjoy Kenneths novels! Very well written and couldn't put it down! Thanks for a great read! 5 stars!
    A superb character study
A very exciting and educational understanding into the mind of a seasoned and dedicated bow Hunter.
I was drawn in by the simplicity and professionalism of the protagonist, whose purpose in life was to
achieve a magnificent goal before saying goodbye to the existence we know. The story conveys dedication
and discipline and a belief one's individual struggle with nature's foes is what separates a real man from a dreamer.
    Spellbinding story
I don't usually read this type of book, but it was a great story with very interesting characters. I read this book by Kenneth Fore because I had already read Wolf Tatoo by him. I like his stories and can't wait to read more.
I never thought I would get interested in a book ...
I never thought I would get interested in a book about a deer. However, this story is so interesting that you cannot put the book down.

    Release date: 07-03-14
    Publisher: Random House Audiobooks
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Quintessential Tyler, yet full of surprises - a perfectly pitched, enchanting, and affecting novel about a man adrift in his own life, Noah's Compass chimes gently, heartbreakingly with our times.
With the humour and poignancy of her classic The Accidental Tourist (though with a protagonist who doesn't venture far from home) Anne Tyler's new novel tells the story of a year in the life of Liam Pennywell, a man in his 61st year. A classical pedant, he's just been 'let go' from his schoolteaching job and downsizes to a tiny out-of-town apartment, where he goes to bed early and alone on his first night.
Widowed, re-married, divorced, and the father of three daughters, Liam is a man who is proud of his recall but has learned to dodge issues and skirt adventure. An unpleasant event occurs, though, to jolt him out of his certainty. Obsessed with a frightening gap in his memory, he sets out to uncover what happened, and finds instead an unusual woman with secrets of her own, and a late-flowering love that brings its own thorny problems. His ex-wife (sensible Barbara) and daughters worry about him but Liam blunders on, His teenage daughter Kitty is sent to stay - though it's not clear who is minding whom. His middle daughter, Louise, is a born-again Christian with a son called Jonah, but her certainties leave Liam still more perplexed.
Noah's Compass is about memory and its loss, about incidents and relationships which open up sight lines into a painful past long dead for a man who becomes aware that merely trying to stay afloat may not be enough.
    Members Reviews:
    Brilliant family drama
LOVED this. Fabulous narration. Funny, moving & thought provoking , almost philosophical. Highly recommended if you are a fan of Anne Tyler or enjoy family dramas with all the problems, politics , pain and joys they bring.
An interesting look at ageing, and reflection on one's life.
Made me laugh out loud and also made me cry.
Couldn't quite link the title to the content!
What did you like best about Noah's Compass? What did you like least?
I liked the intricacies of the relationships and the views back to their past. I felt the book was very slow to get going and there seemed to be no climax to the story - a bit of a plodder!
What other book might you compare Noah's Compass to, and why?
    Not sure
What does Arthur Morey bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
I'm not sure I would have continued to read the whole book whereby listening to Arthur Morey read it made it far more interesting and appealing
If this book were a film would you go see it?
Probably - just to see how it was portrayed
    Disappointing
Not her best. Although the narration was good, I kept falling asleep because the story, or lack of it, did not command my attention.

Eustace is undisputed patriarch of the Farquhar family. That is, he would be if everyone stopped mumbling, let him get on with his shaving and find his way downstairs.
It's not Henry's fault that he snores and that his marriage has collapsed. Or that he failed to get into the cricket team. But he has made up for it and is now a faster motorist than ever he was bowler. He is a good father, too, and one day, when he wakes up from daydreaming, his son Kenneth will thank him.
It is good that Anne sleeps with a whistle in her mouth - how else could she terrify the burglars? As for Mathilda she would love to like her mother, but prefers going for long walks with the dog.
But what will happen to them all if the dog dies?
A devastating postscript follows the story. Placing this eccentric family in isolation after two world wars and at the beginning of our aggressive financial culture, it turns comedy into tragedy. This novel brings a very personal addition to the biographer's remarkable career.
