Mary welcomes back Jay Seegert to talk about foundations, starting points, and worldviews. Communicating with the lost sometimes is reduced to arguing on social media, but that is reducing a pretty complex interaction to trying to out-talk and outlast people we don’t really know, about complex topics that the person probably already has strong opinions about. In the current social landscape, there must be a better way to reason with people and get to the heart of the matter. It’s not about facts that we can convincingly debate, it’s spiritual, and people already have their own preconceived ideas and emotional investments concerning God, and life and death. Is that landscape conducive to contending for the faith? Jay helps the listener understand that there is a way to stick with biblical “starting points” to seek to convince people that 1) God exists and 2) the Bible is His Word, and all the ramifications of that. Anything else is a false starter and rocky foundation.

On today’s edition of SUFTT, Mary takes a look at Psalm 73 as a much-needed answer to the wrestling we all do in the face of a world gone awry. Levite, prophet and worship leader Asaph, author of a dozen Psalms, takes us on a tour through his heart and mind over the seeming success of the rich and famous of his time. We wonder at times what he all struggled with, since we have all the knowledge of good and evil at our fingertips through global media. Nevertheless, he certainly had his share of wrestlings when it came to being distracted by those who had it all, and gave no thought to their own eternity. Why do people who know they will die at some point seem to not even care how it all ends? Asaph knew that God is good, and He has a covenant with Israel – but he still had lots of deep questions for His Maker. But has God ever taken away those who vex us with instant relief? No, the rich and carefree have been with us always, it is US who change after being with our God, in His house. A great lesson for us all who struggle with cultural issues and how to respond in our hearts with a life of contentment.

A common number is about 8,000, more in the OT than in the NT. But some say, depending upon how you parse them out, that there could be as many as 30,000. Of course, if God doesn’t keep every single one, He is not Who He says He is. So, what can we conclude except, He is a God Who keeps them ALL. What does that mean for you and I? Well, from Genesis onward, since God promised to send a Saviour to fix our terminal sin problem, all of His promises are yea and amen. And the categories for said promises? Abundant life, a crown of life, a heavenly home, assurance, comfort, answers to prayer, deliverance, protection, the Spirit, power for service, resurrection, rest, wisdom, strength, victory….shall I go on? You get the idea. Such an important subject in a day and age when people do not keep their promises – but God.

Every day, we are processing probably more info than most people ever did in a lifetime in previous generations. We listen to preachers, podcasts, YouTubes, and we read volumes some days. Are we really listening critically? What about pre-texts and presumptions? We all bring with us various biases, experiences, flaws and flesh. But the Bible is unique, isn’t it? Don’t we want a firm foundation? Are we even concerned about said biases and preconceptions, in that they can cause a cracked foundation? We talk about all the ways that we can “watch our life and doctrine closely” so as not to ruin the hearers, but help them see the truth. A high calling indeed. Apologists, authors, podcasters – Kyle and Flynn are perfect for dissecting this subject and seeing what we can take away from how we hear, read, and process profound truth.

Today, with biblical illiteracy at an all time high, it stands to reason that Christians have no meat on their bones when it comes to the systematic study of prophecy. Whereas formerly, the topics of prophecy were centered around Israel, a global government, a global spirituality and a world wide economy powered by technology, suddenly everything is prophetic, and it’s getting noisier out there. Time to bring things back into focus. And there are more blood moons coming, which means sensationalizing the heavens will also be rampant. Who is teaching this and why? We also discuss the New Wine Pentecost movement. What is it, is it biblical? Is it date setting at the core? Who is promoting it and why should we care? Sometimes following social media Bible prophecy sites more resembles a nursery rhyme than the truth. A cat, playing a fiddle, a cow and the moon makes more sense most days. It is so obvious to so many and yet here we are, with the US and many other nations just deluding themselves around the clock. We discuss Tony Blair’s role in Gaza, a clear delusion. We talk about the disintegration of Portland and why it will never likely improve, but spread; we look at Communion America, a great delusion for the church; and Trump’s deal with Pfizer, delusion that began in 2020 and never really goes away. Why would he make a deal with such a corrupt and wicked corporation? And still another abortion pill goes to market. It just gets more wicked out there, but hallelujah, we have God’s Word: blessed is that one who doesn’t walk, stand, or sit with the wicked (Psalm 1)  Homeward, saints!

It’s more of a skirmish in a much wider war. We discuss discourse in the face of marketplace vitriol from those who want to be self-ruled; Costco’s decision not to distribute the abortion pill; and some activity in the Wisconsin legislature. We can never be over-equipped in a world that still needs to figure out what a woman is.

Making sense of the hostility and moving about society armed with an understanding of the true nature of light vs dark is an important conversation today, and loving the people around us who do not know Jesus, how do we advocate for the common good? We talk about the gatekeepers in society and what it takes to be admitted – or shut out – of the public square.

Mary welcomes guest Richie Furay for our first Testimony Tuesday, as we look at his full and storied life as a member of pioneering bands Buffalo Springfield and Poco.  With all that success, what drove him to his knees? How does a person reconcile or intersect the unique life of the spotlight, in the definitive 1960s no less, with the calling of a pastor and troubadour for Jesus? When he returned to Ohio for his Hall of Fame induction, he had a moment of clarity, that those two lives, and all the craziness, were both him, and God was in every moment. Sometimes we have a hard time reconciling our “two lives” as believers, we run from who we were in shame. But God. We talk to him about the early years, the fame years, and the ministry years. Richie and Nancy have been married since 1967, and as the family has grown up, their seasoning and maturity in Christ has had an impact for eternity.  Keeping up with his energy level is always a great way to spend an hour.
