    Breaking news! We are now available on TuneIN Radio!
    AJ and I have some public service announcements for the better of society. Also, AJ discovers a beautiful needle in the watch world haystack...from overseas! And I wax nostalgically about a long-lost customer service technique that simply doesn't exist today.

    Public Service Announcement to Everyone using their mobile phones in public -
    A Primer for Technology Etiquette
    * If you are at a restaurant or a coffee shop with someone, and simply must have your phone on the table, show the person you’re with that you actually have a slight bit of interest in being with them. Set your phone to vibrate and face down on the table.
    * If you are talking on your mobile phone while the checkout clerk is ringing up your food items at the grocery store, you are automatically despised by the aforementioned clerk, as well as everyone else in line behind you.
    * If you choose to take a call in a public place, and slouch down lower in your chair to “have a more private” conversation, your efforts will be futile; we can still hear your conversation, because we’re still two. feet. away. from. you. Get up and move to a place where people can’t hear you.
    * The longer it takes you to swipe through the thousands of photos on your mobile phone to find the picture you want to show us, the less we are interested in seeing this photo.
    * If you decide to take a selfie in public and make a pouty fish-face with your lips, or flip your hair around and strike that pose you’ve seen from those beautiful people you follow on Instagram, you waive your right to not be gawked at or laughed at by everyone around you. Zoolander called, he wants his “ridiculously good looking” photo poses back.

    Chris' - Counting Change

    Your total is $12.22. You give the clerk a $20 bill. The clerk looks at the change due on the digital register screen, and says like a parrot, “Seven dollars and 78 cents is your change.”

    It USED to be, at least when I was in a job that required me to give change back to customers, that I would count the money back to them. The customer owes $12.22, they give me a $20 bill, and I hand them their change, then dollars, saying, “78 cents makes thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, and Twenty.” *sigh*

    Topic - Apple Airpods - The Cadillac of headphones?

    Pros:

    * Great sound quality
    * Easy to connect (pair) with my phone, tablet, personal laptop, and work laptop
    * Quick-charging
    * Fits my ears

    Cons:

    * Not noise-isolating (I still have to deal with conversations and room chatter)
    * The price
    * White earrings?

    Topic - What are you wearing and carrying this fall?

    Chris:

    * Carhartt heavyweight hooded jacket
    * Levi's Jeans
    * Columbia boots
    * Mechanix gloves
    * Carhartt legacy gear bag, legacy travel kit
    * Rugged travel bag and toiletry kit

    AJ:
    A little PNW trivia:

    * Eddie Bauer was a real person (http://www.eddiebauer.com/company-info/company-info-our-founder.jsp).
    * Born and raised in the state of Washington, he was a husband, a father, a businessman, an innovator and a true outdoorsman. Eddie Bauer was born on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands in Washington (1899).
    * 1920- Brand was founded.
    * 1936- He created the "Skyliner," the first quilted goose down jacket in North America, a design he would patent in 1940 thus... kind of sinching the status of the guy who invented the puffy jacket.
    * 1942 He began producing garments and sleeping bags in support of the war effort. In the middle of the military garment label sewn into each of these products were the words, "Eddie Bauer Seattle U.S.A." At the end of the war, soldiers from all over the country wrote to him based on that label. "Where can I get more of that down stuff? You saved my life!"
    * And in 1945 He published the company's first catalog, "Eddie Bauer Alaska Outfitter," selling garments and sleeping bags insulated with goose down.
    * Eddie Bauer died at the age of 86 on April 18 1986

    AJ's Picks:

    * Eddie Bauer - MEN'S MICROTHERM STORMDOWN VEST “First Accent” http://www.eddiebauer.com/product/mens-microtherm-stormdown-vest/38832205?showProducts=111&sizetype=&size=
    * PNW Flannel - usually acquired every few years visiting a Eddie Bauer outlet
    * For the rain atop that Eddie Bauer vest: a blue REI Elements (discontinued unfortunately) https://www.rei.com/
    * REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.- founded 1938; Lloyd and Mary Anderson founded **REI** in Seattle, Washington, in 1938. The Andersons imported an Akadem Pickel ice axe from Austria for themselves and decided to set up a co-operative to help outdoor enthusiasts acquire good quality climbing gear at reasonable prices.

  • Ep. 54 : "Reflections in a Black Mirror"
    PSAs, not PDAs in Tech -

    Five rules for dealing with computer techs (https://medium.com/@mnmltek/five-rules-for-dealing-with-computer-techs-4d8af81a1d78):

    * If a computer tech is working on your equipment for free, food and drink is a mandatory payment.
    * Just because you see your tech around town doesn’t mean you can automatically ask them a question about your computer problems.
    * Don’t expect your old equipment to be able to run the latest and greatest software.
    * When a computer tech tells you a potential solution to your computer problem, do not say, “No I don’t think that’s it.”
    * Do not antagonize, tease, or talk down to a computer tech.

    Shopping - Avoid the late-November rush

    Tech Addiction:

    It is interesting to see a subset of people, mostly close to tech, gravitating towards the days of the iPhone 1. The days before apps.

  • Ep. 53 "Fall Time Blues"
    On this episode: AJ and I are seeing RED as the leaves are turning ORANGE and YELLOW. The GREEN grass is getting wet from all the rain which is giving us the BLUES. If you're feeling down about the fall season, stay tuned for some colorful conversation! Let's get the party started. This is the Bellingham Podcast...

    Topic - How do you beat the PNW fall-blues...as the leaves turn orange...and die

    Chris I drive. Hannegan Road to Lynden. Lake Whatcom Boulevard to Alger. Chuckanut Drive to Burlington. Mini-road trips with quiet music to stare at a different screen. My vehicle's windshield! I also do a fall possession purge. Clothes I haven't worn for a while, unnecessary tech cables, accumulated books and magazines. All donated or eliminated from my home.

    Topic - 24-Hour Staycation
    Chris AM visits to Rustic Coffee in Fairhaven, Rocket Donuts on Holly Street, and Caffe Adagio on Railroad Avenue (not in that order.) PM visits to Village Books, a Taylor Dock walk to Boulevard Park, and the Filling Station. All in Fairhaven. Highlight of the evening is a big bowl of Pho at Soy House on Holly Street and a movie at the Pickford Cinema. Maybe a Thai Basil Daiquiri No.2 and an everything plate at the Temple Bar to bring the day in for a landing.

    AJ is still in his remodel- and has a we-one so his 24hr staycation is a bit shorter

    * Right off the bat, we were hammering the point of tech security - mobile PIN codes
    * More of an “interview” feel, Chris hadn't taken his witty clever pills back then, but showed signs of transparency and genuineness in his battle with clutter.
    * 5 questions? Really, Chris?
    * We hadn't gotten our intro and outro mojo working yet.
    * Episode 18 - November 6, 2016 (https://www.spreaker.com/user/bellinghampodcast/bpm-tech-episode-18) - Emergence of the disdain for the new shiny
    * Macbook Laptop “Touchbar” and Microsoft Surface Studio > Used car prices
    * Episode 20, November 20, 2016 (https://www.spreaker.com/user/bellinghampodcast/bpm-tech-episode-20-20-20-passwords) - Online and On the Airwaves with KMRE 102.3 FM
