Story Transcript:

Ru: В центре Москвы, в здании из стекла и стали, среди многочисленных офисов, кипела жизнь.
En: In the center of Moskvy, in a building of glass and steel, amid numerous offices, life was bustling.

Ru: В одном из них работал Николай, молодой аналитик.
En: In one of them worked Nikolay, a young analyst.

Ru: Наступила осень, и листопад за окном напомнил о скоротечности времени.
En: Autumn had arrived, and the falling leaves outside reminded him of the fleetingness of time.

Ru: В этом планетарии данных и цифр, каждый стремился наверх - к заветной должности.
En: In this data and digits planetarium, everyone was striving upwards to the coveted position.

Ru: Николай мечтал о продвижении.
En: Nikolay dreamed of advancing.

Ru: Ничто, казалось бы, не могло остановить его, кроме небольшой проблемы.
En: It seemed that nothing could stop him, except for one small problem.

Ru: Конфиденциальный документ исчез.
En: A confidential document had disappeared.

Ru: В воздухе повисло напряжение.
En: Tension hung in the air.

Ru: Кто мог украсть его?
En: Who could have stolen it?

Ru: Или просто потерять?
En: Or simply lost it?

Ru: Светлана, опытная аналитик, всегда шла впереди.
En: Svetlana, an experienced analyst, was always ahead.

Ru: Она знала о каждом событии в офисе, её уважали и побаивались.
En: She knew about every event in the office; she was respected and somewhat feared.

Ru: Она казалась идеальным союзником, но могла ли Николай ей доверять?
En: She seemed like the ideal ally, but could Nikolay trust her?

Ru: В условиях постоянной конкуренции в офисе это был большой вопрос.
En: In the constant competition of the office, this was a big question.

Ru: Как ни странно, решение пришло само.
En: Strangely enough, the solution came on its own.

Ru: Николай решил рискнуть и поговорить со Светланой.
En: Nikolay decided to take a risk and talk to Svetlana.

Ru: Он осторожно намекнул на проблему.
En: He carefully hinted at the problem.

Ru: Светлана вздохнула, посмотрела на него с интересом, будто вот-вот назовёт правильный ответ из сложной головоломки, и кивнула.
En: Svetlana sighed, looked at him with interest, as if she was about to name the right answer to a complex puzzle, and nodded.

Ru: Они начали исследовать офис.
En: They began investigating the office.

Ru: Кто-то провёл день, обсуждая зарплату.
En: Some spent the day discussing salaries.

Ru: Другие ехали за кофе.
En: Others went out for coffee.

Ru: Единицы зашли в привязанные к столам папки.
En: Only a few checked the desk-bound folders.

Ru: Время шло, но результатов не было.
En: Time passed, but there were no results.

Ru: Николай начал сомневаться.
En: Nikolay began to have doubts.

Ru: А вдруг Светлана использует эту ситуацию против него?
En: What if Svetlana was using this situation against him?

Ru: Но, собравшись с духом, он продолжил расследование.
En: But, gathering his courage, he continued the investigation.

Ru: Когда надежда уже почти улетучилась, Николай случайно заглянул в офисную комнату отдыха.
En: When hope had almost faded, Nikolay accidentally looked into the office break room.

Ru: Среди оставленных на столе стаканчиков с кофе и жарких аргументов о футбольных матчах ледоколом выделялся документ.

Ru: Никто не обращал внимания на папку с желаемыми цифрами.
En: No one paid attention to the folder with the desired numbers.

Ru: В этот момент, боковым зрением он уловил, как Светлана выходила из комнаты.
En: At that moment, out of the corner of his eye, he caught Svetlana leaving the room.

Ru: Следовало бы удивляться, но было только облегчение.
En: One would have expected surprise, but there was only relief.

Ru: Документ у него в руках, миссия выполнена.
En: The document in his hands, mission accomplished.

Ru: Вернув документ в руководство, Николай получил одобрение.
En: Returning the document to management, Nikolay received approval.

Ru: В следующее утро он попросил Светлану выйти в коридор для разговора.
En: The next morning, he asked Svetlana to step into the corridor for a conversation.

Ru: — Я видела, как ты справился, — призналась она.
En: — I saw how you handled it, — she admitted.

Ru: — Я спрятала этот документ, чтобы испытать тебя.
En: — I hid that document to test you.

Ru: Хотела узнать, готов ли человек, как ты, к новым высотам.
En: I wanted to see if a person like you is ready for new heights.

Ru: Николай удивлённо молчал, обдумывая её слова.
En: Nikolay stood in surprised silence, pondering her words.

Ru: Он почувствовал, как тает лед его подозрительности.
En: He felt the ice of his suspicion melt away.

Ru: Не всё решается с помощью хитрости и сноровки.
En: Not everything is resolved with cunning and skill.

Ru: Порой важнее всего помнить о честности.
En: Sometimes, above all, it is important to remember honesty.

Ru: На этом их рабочий день завершился - с новым пониманием и договорённостью о сотрудничестве.
En: Their workday ended on that note - with a new understanding and an agreement to cooperate.

Ru: Теперь он знал: не всегда карьера важнее моральных принципов.
En: Now he knew: a career isn't always more important than moral principles.

Ru: Эту осень он запомнит навсегда.
En: He would remember this autumn forever.
