Since recording this episode Lauren has rebranded as River Oaks Psychology. All her contact information has been updated in these show notes. Please disregard the contact information listed on the slide in the video.
In this interview, Lauren shares the value counseling has - whether for men (yes, I said it), parents, or individuals with disabilities. It's important for us to keep a healthy balance in our lives. This doesn't mean everything is always going to be okay. We have to roll with the punches. Lauren has overcome her own challenges. Born with muscular dystrophy, she got her first wheelchair when she was 5 years old.
I want to help men understand it's okay to talk with someone. It does not make us less than others. These ideas of masculinity that are floating around are outdated and need to be revisited. If you have a belief it's shameful for men to go to therapy, Lauren wants you to ask where it's coming from.
When we shift to talking about parents we don't talk about couples therapy. Rather our focus is on helping parents let their children explore their world. This may mean risking failure, and that's okay. Few of us were successful at everything we did the first time we tried. Start including your child in the IEP meetings as early as elementary school. When you give them a choice, honor what they select.
Individuals with disabilities may not feel heard. They could feel as though no one sees anything beyond their disability. It's not fair to them to live feeling like this. Working with a therapist may help. Maybe you are ignored the first time you speak up, but this doesn't mean you should stop.
