So in the more than 150 years since the 1859 solar storm known as the Carrington Event, the Earth's magnetic field, which helps to protect us from a solar coronal mass ejection, is far weaker than it was. Consider also that an interplanetary CME (ICME) directed at us compresses Earth's magnetosphere on the dayside and extends it on the nightside. According to Wikipedia, "When the magnetosphere reconnects on the nightside, it releases power on the order of terawatt scale, which is directed back toward Earth's upper atmosphere."
