We are on a mission to „disenshittify the Internet or die“ (Cory Doctorow). The most clear and promising way forward is (re-) decentralization. For many migrants from more hostile environments like X, the Fediverse feels like a friendly neighbourhood where civilized conversation and reason prevail. This is, of course, not a genetic property hard-wired into Mastodon & Co. It is the result of conflictual experiences (most notably when the Fediverse had to deal with alt right platforms as Gab (e.g. De Winkel 2023) and Trump’s Truth Social) out of which protective measures were developed – namely the Mastodon Server Covenant, block lists for accounts and instances, or the moderator community IFTAS and its tools.

Yet,* being a black person can make for a very different experience on the Fediverse (Jerry Bell, 01.08.2024). So the work of inventing a better place is by no means over.

The not-for-profit nature and the small scale of communities clearly seem to be positive elements for the Fediverse as a whole. But how resilient is the Fediverse to different forms of risks? How can its defenses be improved by structural policy, technical, protocolairy decisions? What further tools can make life easier for those who typically volunteer to keep the better place universe running? And – since this is a transatlantic panel – nothing less than: How can the Fediverse achieve world domination?

The last event of the Berlin Fediverse Day brings together panelists in Berlin and participants of the virtual unconference FediForum for whom it will be the first event of their final day.
