Bessie's Prayer

In this second installment of the podcast, we present additional content from "Bessie's Prayer" - including Walter's first public performance at the Chicago Stadium, singing "God Bless America" at a war bond rally to support the armed services during World War II. We also hear the story of his sister, Barbara, punching a nun over pea soup and Walter's experience with his dad watching Jackie Robinson play at Wrigley Field.

In this inagural episode of the podcast, we present excerpts from the first chapters of Bessie's Prayer - beginning with Walter's grandparents and parents (Herman and Bessie). Follow their family through story from the American South to Sweet Home Chicago.
